FC Bayern München V Besiktas JK
UEFA Champions League: Knockout Phase, Round of 16, 1st Leg
Allianz Arena, Munich, Germany
Tuesday, February 20th, 2018    2:45PM EST        FS2

Robert Lewandowski (CF, FCB)

Perhaps the world’s best pure striker, Robert Lewandowski leads the line for FC Hollywood! The top scorer in the Bundesliga two seasons ago, top goalscorer of UEFA’s FIFA World Cup Qualifiers, and most assuredly the Bundesliga’s top scorer once again this campaign, Lewandowski has cemented his place among the world’s elite, albeit still flying under the radar just a bit thanks to neither playing for Spain’s top two nor an EPL club.  That said, keep an eye on this former BVB star as he’s sure to strike more than once against Besiktas.

Pepe (CB, BJK)

If there’s anyone who could possibly slow down Bayern’s #9, it’s Pepe!  The longtime Real Madrid man has moved on to Istanbul, Turkey, this season.  No doubt he’s the anchor for the Black Eagles back four.  If Besiktas wants a prayer’s chance of beating Bayern at Vodafone Park in the 2nd leg, then Pepe must delve into his Galactico prime and play enforcer in front of his own goal.  Can he do it?

Chelsea FC V FC Barcelona
UEFA Champions League: Knockout Phase, Round of 16, 1st Leg
Stamford Bridge, London, England
Tuesday, February 20th, 2018    2:45PM EST        FS1

Eden Hazard (LW, CHE)

One of Belgium’s crowned jewels, Eden Hazard has produced plenty moments of magic over the past several seasons for Chelsea en route to claiming 2 Premier League Titles.  The problem is, Hazard has also experienced his fair share of forgettable moments as well during this time.  Sandwiched in between the Blues’ two titles, Eden seemed to disappear during matches, making no impact whatsoever.  This year has been slightly different however, even though the Londoners have been churning out poor results time and time again this campaign, Hazard has been better, but still not consistent.  Against a team like Barcelona, Chelsea need Eden at his best, battling through tough tackles and finishing with clinical precision.  Remember, Hazard still has scored 20 or more goals in a single Premier League season, not very good for someone Europe pumps up as Elite.

Lionel Messi (SS/RW/AM, FCB)

Since we’re on the topic of Elite talent, there’s nobody better than La Pulga!  The five-time Ballon d’Or winner (should have received a couple more if one Gonzalo Higuien would have converted his chances against Chile, but I digress) is Barca’s main maestro.  With one touch of the ball, Messi can literally turn an opponent and a match on its head.  However, historically that hasn’t been the case for Messi against Chelsea.  In nearly 10 appearances against the English side, Messi has yet to register a goal.  I simply can’t imagine that statistic lasting much longer as this is more of an aberration than anything else.  Therefore, Lionel will undoubtedly strike over the course of this two-legged tie, it’s just a matter of when. This odds are greater given the current poor rendition of a Chelsea backline.

FC Shakhtar Donetsk V AS Roma
UEFA Champions League: Knockout Phase, Round of 16, Leg 1
Metalist Stadium, Kharkiv, Ukraine
Wednesday, February 21st, 2018    2:45PM EST        FS2

Fred (CM, SKT)

Shakhtar’s midfield general, Fred, will look to control the middle of the park against favorites Roma, winning possession and spraying balls forward right, left, and center.  Fred has impressed so much so at Shakhtar, like several other Brazilians before him, such as Douglas Costa, Luiz Adriano, Fernandinho, and Alex Teixeira, that he’s already been bought by Pep Guardiola’s Man City.  Fred will complete this campaign for the Moles before making the move to Manchester in the summer.  So, keep watch of the Selecao man as he could help spurn an upset in Ukraine.

Allison (GK, ASR)

Speaking of the Selecao, Roma too have themselves a Brazilian international by way of Allison.  Not only is he La Lupa’s standout goalkeeper, but Allison is also Brazil’s #1.  Since joining the Italian club in 2016 from Internatcional, he has blossomed into one of Serie A’s top shot stoppers, en route to becoming a hot commodity in the transfer market as Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool look to poach another Roma star for the second summer running.  So, look out for the bearded Brazilian as he aims to keep a clean sheet against his Brazilian buddies playing for Shakhtar.

Sevilla FC V Manchester United FC
UEFA Champions League: Knockout Phase, Round of 16, Leg 1
Estadio Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan, Seville, Andalusia, Spain
Wednesday, February 21st, 2018    2:45PM EST        FS1

Steven N’Zonzi (DM, SEV)

At defensive midfield, Steven N’Zonzi is the fulcrum of Sevilla’s success.  The Frenchman is able to go box-to-box, capable of attacking goal and finishing with quality via his head and his feet. He also possesses the athletic ability to track back, to muck up the opposition’s offensive opportunities.  Sevilla truly goes as N’Zonzi does.  Thus, keep a close eye on the former Stoke City midfielder as he tries to make it a long night for Jose Mourinho’s men.

David De Gea (GK, MAN)

I could have gone a number of different ways with this pick, Alexis Sanchez, Paul Pogba, Romelu Lukaku, but no, it has to been none other than David De Gea.  Currently the world’s best goalkeeper, De Gea has flourished in his time at Old Trafford. His excellence hasn’t gone unnoticed or been undervalued due to his position.  Rather, De Gea has dazzled in front of goal with such efficiency, that he’s won Player of the Year for Manchester United three year’s in a row.  An award, mind you, that is voted on by team members.  So, be sure to catch De Gea work his magic in goal as he will undoubtedly make life difficult for the Sevilla.

Finally!  The Champions League is back!  Europe’s top competition kicks off 2018 with two Round of 16 1st leg fixtures today and two tomorrow!  Thus, I’ll be providing footballing shorts for each match, but with a twist.  I’ve selected one player from each squad to keep an eye on, as he will most assuredly play a part in his side producing a result, or not.  So without further ado, here we go!

FC Basel 1893 v Manchester City FC
UEFA Champions League:  Knockout Phase, Round of 16, Leg 1
St. Jakob-Park, Basel, Switzerland
Tuesday, February 13th, 2018    2:45PM EST        FS2

Tomas Vlacik (GK, FCB)

The Czech international has been been manning the posts for Switzerland’s biggest club since 2014.  In route to amassing 100 club caps, Vlacik has contributed to three consecutive Swiss Super League Titles, and has taken part in two of Basel’s three Knockout Phase caliber squads (2014-15, 2017-18).  So, keep an eye on Vlacik today as his quality will assuredly be tested against Europe’s 2017-18 betting favorites, Manchester City.

Kevin De Bruyne (AM, MC)

One of the main reason’s for City’s dominance domestically and throughout Europe this season has to be the play of Kevin De Bruyne.  The one time Chelsea youth academy player has been performing at the near highest of levels.  So good so, that his manager Pep Guardiola is on record has saying that De Bruyne could win the ballon d’Or if City snag the famed bunny ears.  That’s saying quite a lot considering the player he helped groom on the banks of the Mediterranean.  Thus, watch for De Bruyne pull the strings of Basel’s midfield and defense time and again, creating a plethora of scoring chances for his attacking ‘mates.

Juventus vs Tottenham Hotspur FC
UEFA Champions League: Knockout Phase, Round of 16, Leg 1
Allianz Stadium, Turin, Italy
Tuesday, February 13th, 2018    2:45PM EST        FS1

Gianluigi Buffon (GK, JUV)

The Old Lady’s old man, Gigi Buffon, will once again be in net today.  Ranking second all-time for most UCL appearances (121) and first in UCL Finals appearances (3) without winning the Champions League, Buffon is still keeping his dream alive through continued world class shot-stopping.  Juventus come into this match against Spurs having not allowed a goal in its last 16 matches in all comps.  Therefore, keep an eye on the 40 year old Italian between the sticks, as he eyes another trip to the finals, and hopefully a winner’s medal.

Harry Kane (CF, TOT)

If there’s anyone at the moment who could end Juve’s clean sheet streak, it’s perhaps Tottenham’s Harry Kane.  The 24 year old Brit currently leads all of Europe in goals this domestic season with 23.  Yes, more than Messi (20) and Cristiano Ronaldo (11).  Thus, watch Kane try to accomplish something it took Messi more than a handful of games to do, score on Gigi.  Good luck kid.

FC Porto v Liverpool FC
UEFA Champions League: Knockout Phase, Round of 16, Leg 1
Estadio do Dragao, Porto, Portugal
Wednesday, February 14th, 2018    2:45PM EST        FS2

Moussa Marega (CF, FCP)

A name you probably haven’t heard much of, Moussa Marega is one of the best strikers in Liga NOS.  He’s tallied 16 goals thus far this season, ranking 3rd in the league.  Couple his own goalscoring prowess with the fact that his striking partner Vincent Aboubakar is doubtful for this match, and the Mali international will be getting fed the ball earlier and often up front.  Thus, keep an eye on the center forward as he will look to take full advantage of a rather porous Liverpool backline.  I think Marega and company could actually pull of a shocker here and win the match and the tie.

Mohamed Salah (LW, LFC)

Keeping with the trend of top goal scorers, the Egyptian has been on fire since moving to Anfield this past summer.  He’s currently in second place in the race for the Golden Shoe, 1 goal adrift of the aforementioned Premier League foe Harry Kane.  Therefore, be sure to hone in on Salah, as he’s sure to dazzle with his exceptional pace down the right flank.  I’m sure he’ll cap off a run or two with his foot flicking the ball into the back of the net.

Real Madrid CF v Paris Saint-Germain
UEFA Champions League: Knockout Phase, Round of 16, Leg 1
Estadio Santiago Bernabéu, Madrid, Spain
Wednesday, February 14th, 2018    2:45PM EST        FS1

Cristiano Ronaldo (LW/CF, RM)

As if there’d be any other chosen here.  The much maligned, but current and five-time Ballon d’Or winner, Cristiano Ronaldo will be taking center stage at his White House in Madrid.  Despite being jeered often this domestic campaign for a lack of production and a stumbling Real squad, Ronaldo was superb in the Group Stage, accruing a record nine goals in six matches.  In addition, his overall form has improved significantly over the past several weeks, as he’s scored seven goals from the past four La Liga fixtures.  Therefore, it appears Cristiano is ready to shoot his side to an unprecedented third consecutive Champions League crown in the modern-era.

Neymar Jr. (LW, PSG)

The former Cule moved to Paris this past summer for games like these, certainly not for Ligue 1 competition.  As expected, Neymar has steamrolled his way through the French top flight producing 20 goals and 11 assists so far.  However, Ney knows his Ballon d’Or case will be maybe for or against Europe’s best in the Champions League, and that starts Wednesday as he squares off against Cristiano and Real Madrid.  Ney’s the leading man for his squad now that he’s out of Messi’s shadow.  The question is, will Neymar Jr. seize the moment or will the bright lights of the White House prove blinding for the Brazilian on the pitch?

Valencia CF vs FC Barcelona
Copa del Rey: Semifinals, Leg 2 (0-1 agg.)
Mestalla Stadium, Valencia, Spain
Thursday, February 8th, 2018    3:30PM EST        beIN SPORTS

It’s Leg 2 of the King’s Cup semifinal between the Cules and the Bats!  Somewhat surprisingly, this tie was rather evenly balanced through the first 90 minutes despite the absence of key figures for Valencia in leg 1, such as Kondogbia, Guedes, and Zaza.  Thus, leg 2 should be a real ‘cracker!  It’s assured that the Bats will boast their “A” squad, as will defending Champs Barcelona.  Earlier this season, the two Mediterranean coast clubs played to a controversial 1-1 draw at the Mestalla that saw a Leo Messi goal disallowed, despite the ball clearly crossing the goaline.  Nevertheless, it was a tight— testy affair inside a very hostile Mestalla Stadium.  I fully expect more of the same this match.  Valencia will have to chase the game to some degree,  seeing as though the Bats come in a goal down.  That could spell disaster for the home team as it could give Messi, Suarez, and company more room to operate.  1 away goal for Barca is likely enough, but as we’ve seen time and again this year in Spain, expect the unexpected.

LSB Prediction: Rodrigo, Zaza, and Guedes will press up the pitch early and often, looking for a Barca turnover inside their own half.  The opportunity will come, and Guedes will convert.  However, the Azulgrana will remain poised under pressure, striking for for the match equalizer and tie winner in added time through La Pulga!  1-1 Draw (FC Barcelona advances on 2-1 aggregate)

Tottenham Hotspur FC vs Arsenal FC
North London Derby
Premier League: Matchday 27
Wembley Stadium, London, England
Saturday February 10th, 2018    7:30AM EST        NBCSN

This weekend kicks off with an early bird special and derby day delight in the Hotspur against the Gunners!  Not just a match being played for city bragging rights, this game will be key in the race for finishing within the Premier League’s top 4.  Tottenham currently sits fifth with 49 points and Arsenal in sixth with 45 points.  Their other city rivals, Chelsea, is occupying the fourth and final Champions League slot with 50 points and a game in hand.  Thus, a result in a head to head battle can result in as much as a six point swing.  With the Gunners currently five points adrift from fourth, it’s obvious this match means more to the Gunners, as earning a win is almost imperative.  Meanwhile, Hotspur could afford to draw, keeping the four point gap in tact between them and Arsenal, however they’ll still be chasing Chelsea.

On the pitch, both clubs possess a bevy of offensive firepower.  For Arsenal, they’ve reloaded during the winter window, acquiring goal scorers extraordinaire Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Henrick Mkhtaryan.  The two dazzled last weekend in a 5-1 drubbing of Everton at the Emirates.  Aubameyang struck in his first match for the Londoners, and Mkhtarayn produced a hat-trick of assists himself.  As for Tottenham, they have themselves England’s top striker in Harry Kane.  Currently, Kane ranks first in the Premier League in goals, as well as being a top the Golden Boot rankings across all of Europe with 22 goals.

LSB Prediction:  Without question, plenty of goals will be scored in this one.  Kane will net a brace; but Ozil and Mkhtaryan to Aubameyang will be the theme of the day as the Gunners steal all three points at Wembley.  3-2 Arsenal FC

AC Milan vs SS Lazio
TIM Cup: Semifinal, 1st Leg
San Siro, Milan, Italy

Wednesday, January 31st, 2018    2:45PM EST

A rematch of last weekend’s Serie A fixture, Milan and Lazio will be squaring off once again from the San Siro this Thursday.  Instead of the match simply being one of 38 league matchdays, this time the stakes are a tad more important as it’s the first leg of the Coppa Italia semifinals.  Milan, who spent big this past off-season, has struggled mightily in Serie A.  Already they have almost assuredly sealed their fate of failing to qualify for the Champions League, once again.  Thus, Milan will be putting all of its eggs into the TIM Cup’s basket in an effort to claim a major trophy this season.  Meanwhile, Lazio, who have surprised this season, currently sit third in Serie A. They have already beaten Juventus at the start of the year to claim the Supercoppa de Italia, but will be seeking revenge after losing to the Diablos this past Sunday.  It will no doubt be a feisty affair.  Lazio will seek to at minimum register a crucial away goal, before heading home to the Stadio Olimpico for Leg 2.  Meanwhile, Milan will likely need a win at home, to have a chance of winning the tie in Rome.

LSB Prediction:  Despite the White and Sky Blues losing 2-1 to Milan just days ago, and still being without star forward Ciro Immobile, I foresee the Eagles flying high in attack.  Led by breakout Brazilian Filipe Anderson, Lazio will redeem themselves and not only strike for an away goal, but beat Bonucci’s Screwdrivers 1-0.  1-0 SS Lazio

FC Barcelona vs Valencia CF
Copa del Rey: Semifinal, Leg 1
Camp Nou, Barcelona, Catalunya
Thursday, February 1st, 2018        3:30PM EST        beIN SPORTS

Without question this is the most even match of the round for the Copa del Rey.  Two clubs steeped in Spanish footballing history, Barcelona and Valencia are set to clash in Thursday’s semifinal first leg.  The Cules have won a record 29 Copas del Rey, including the last three on the bounce.  Meanwhile, the Bats have won the trophy seven times of their own, whilst finishing runners up an additional nine times.  Combine that rich history with present day talent, and it’s no question that this match will provide us with offensive fireworks at both ends of the pitch.  Lionel Messi has been playing at his usual magisterial best, leading FCB to an unbeaten LaLiga season through 21 matchdays.  Meanwhile, Valencia has produced the goods en route to a third place standing in LaLiga themselves this season, thanks to an infusion of top quality youngsters.  The Bats have been known for developing players of the highest caliber for years.  Just look at Barcelona’s squads of recent years:  Jordi Alba, Paco Alcacer, and Andre Gomes are all Valencia youth products.  Lets not forget current Galactico Isco, also, came up through the Bats ranks.  With that said, the current squad is no exception as players such as Santi Mina, Carlos Soler, Jose Gaya, and Ferran Torres are all extraordinary young talents.  Expect them and 21 year old PSG loanee Goncalo Guedes to press Barcelona up the pitch in search of turnovers and quick counters.

LSB Prediction:  Valencia’s youth has shown up time and again this season, but will it at the Camp Nou in the Copa semifinals?  I think not.  Barcelona’s wealth of riches in terms of talent and experience wins out in Leg 1.  Plus, the Azulgrana have this little guy nicknamed La Pulga, only the world’s best player….ever.  Good luck Valencia.  3-1 FC Barcelona

Arsenal FC vs Chelsea FC
Carabao Cup: 2nd Leg (2-2)
Emirates Stadium, London, England
Wednesday, January 24th, 2018        3:00PM EST        ESPN3

Alexis who? That’s what the home supporters at the Emirates will hopefully be saying come Wednesday, as this fixture will mark the start of the post-Alexis era for the Gunners.  On the surface, one would think Arsenal would have been desperate to have Sanchez available for this match.  However, him leaving could be just what the doctor ordered inside the Gunners locker room.  It had been reported that the squad had grown old of his act and tired of his tirades.  Key figures need to step up however, for a positive result.  Mesut Ozil needs to continue playing inspired and imaginative football, and the trio of strikers in Lacazette, Welbeck, and Giroud (although who knows how much longer Giroud will be around for) need to step and start scoring consistently.

Speaking of consistent scoring, Chelsea appears to be in dire need of a striker themselves.  After splurging on Alvaro Morata in the summer, the Blues thought they’d secured a viable replacement for Diego Costa.  Instead, they’ve acquired a player who’s been a shell of his Galactico-self.  As Morata miss fires in front of goal time and again, we’ve now seen Antonio Conte luring Roma’s Eden Dzeko into coming to Stamford Bridge.  Still, Chelsea, the defending Premier League Champions, must have more offensive weapons than just Morata? The answer is yes, but no one will talk about the rest of Chelsea’s underachieving squad.  In particular, no one will speak ill about the golden boy for the London-based club and the Premier League as a whole, Eden Hazard.  The Belgian has won three Chelsea Player of the Year Awards and was just voted onto the 2017 UEFA Team of the Year by fans.  All theses accolades and more, yet the man has never scored 20 goals in a domestic season, let alone, 30+.  Perhaps Hazard needs to stop being just that, and instead start performing at a caliber that is worthy and required of Real Madrid transfer talk (something that’s be stewing for years now).  But I digress— this is a London derby with the Gunners holding the advantage on a 2-2 scoreline with two away goals.  Essentially this means that the Blues most likely need to win the match outright, so let’s go Hazard and Morata, time to put on your big boy pants, get work, and score some goals.

LSB Prediction:  Wth an electric Emirates crowd behind the Gunners, Ozil produces an awe inspiring display en route to a crucial 1-1 draw.  1-1 Arsenal FC (Advances to Carabao Cup final on away goal advantage)

FC Barcelona vs RCD Espanyol
Copa del Rey: 2nd Leg (0-1)
Camp Nou, Barcelona, Catalonia
Thursday, January 25th, 2018        3:30PM EST        beIN SPORTS

Leg 1 produced a bit of a stunner as the Periquitos put an end to their city rival’s unbeaten run of 27 matches in all competitions.  Despite a well rotated squad for La Blaugrana, Barcelona still had the superior quality on the pitch, including the infamous Lionel Messi.  However, as I stated last week, when rivals clash, you can can throw out the records.  Why?  Because David will give Goliath his all, and then some.  That is exactly what Espanyol’s goalkeeper, Diego Lopez, did.  The former Real Madrid man produced some brilliant saves, including a Messi penalty kick.  In turn, Lopez’s efforts kept Espanyol in the match till the end, where the Periquitos ultimately struck for the match-winner on a counter attack, shocking FCB, Spain, and the rest of Europe.

Fast forward to this Thursday, Espanyol all of a sudden find themselves in a much better position heading the second leg at the Camp Nou.  With Barcelona failing to strike an away goal, FCB must win the match by at least two goals to advance to the semifinals, with a 1-0 scoreline being the lone exception and that will simply force extra time.  Thus, Espanyol holds a glimmer of hope.  Will the light shine through for the Periquitos at the end of the tunnel?

LSB Prediction:  Barcelona romped its way to a 5-0 bounce back win over Real Betis last weekend, with both Messi and Suarez bracing in the second half.  I deem the 1-0 loss at Espanyol was truly a blip on the radar, rather than a mid-season swoon.  Therefore, I foresee La Azulgrana seeing out this two-legged El Derbi tie with Philippe Coutinho striking on his Barca debut and Leo Messi netting a hat trick.  4-0 FC Barcelona

DERBY DAY SHORTS

What a week it was in England and Spain. The headliner of course was that despite the Gunners poor performance at the weekend, losing at Bournemouth, the “Invincibles” were popping champagne as they celebrated City’s loss to the high flying Reds.  Yes, Man City is no longer unbeaten in England.  It was an epic match by the hosts, Liverpool, as well as the visiting City.  A 4-1 scoreline halfway through the second half and finishing 4-3, it was a offensive affair, with a never say die attitude.

Meanwhile in Spain, the reigning European Champions Real Madrid faltered again this past Saturday.  Despite producing 28 shots, the Galacticos were shut out by Villarreal at the “White House”.   To make matters worse, the Blancos conceded a late counter attacking goal to ultimately lose 1-0 to the Yellow Submarine.  Then on Sunday, not to far from Madrid, in Anoeta, Barcelona appeared as though they’d go down for the first time this season.  Trailing 2-0 late in the first half, Barca was able to bring one back before the break through Paulinho’s tap-in.  That goal proved decisive as LaLiga’s Champions-elect appeared to gain momentum.  Once the second half whistle sounded, the Barcelona we are accustomed to seeing was in action.  Suarez doubled for the second and third goals, with his first being a sublime curler to the far post.  Lastly, Lionel Messi put the final touches on Barca’s rare Anoeta victory with a free kick wonder strike leaving his Argentine compatriot goalkeeper Ruilli a spectator, as the ball soared high and dipped inside the far post.

Pressing on to this week’s slate of games, I’ve picked two derbies that should keep this sumptuous footballing action going. We have a midweek clash of Catalan clubs in La Copa, followed up by De Klassieker in the Dutch Eredivisie!  So without further ado, let’s delve into the previews.

RCD Espanyol vs FC Barcelona
REFF Copa del Rey: Quarterfinal, Leg 1
RCDE Stadium, Barcelona, Catalunya, Spain
Wednesday, January 17th, 2018        3:30PM EST        beIN SPORTS

To those in Catalunya, this match is simply known as El Derbi!  With the King’s christened club, Espanyol, having the honors of hosting the first leg of this two-legged quarterfinal, the Periquitos will be looking to get out on the front foot in an attempt to pull off a shocker of beating Barcelona and setting themselves up for a realistic chance of holding on to win the tie at the Camp Nou.  In rivalry games, records don’t always matter, however in this instance Barcelona hold a significant 66 wins advantage over Espanyol (league matches).  In addition, the Periquitos don’t have Lionel Messi or Luis Suarez.  But, Espanyol will have the backing of its home crowd and the ability to counter attack with young strikers such as Gerard Moreno and Leo Baptistao.  Thus, this should be an intriguing derbi between David and Goliath.

LSB Prediction:  The Periquitos will come out pressing Barca hard, as did Real Sociedad this past weekend.  As a result, Espanyol will strike once through Gerard Moreno, but in the end Barca’s quality will rear its ugly head and dispatch 3 goals of their own en route to all but sealing its place in La Copa’s semifinal round.  3-1 FC Barcelona

AFC Ajax vs Feyenoord Rotterdam
Dutch Eredivisie: Matchday 19
Johan Crujff Arena, Amsterdam, Netherlands
Sunday, January 21st, 2018        8:30AM EST

Labeled as the Dutch’s version of El Clasico, “De Klassieker” is THE rivalry in the Netherlands.  Dating back to 1921, these Dutch giants have been squaring off, with often times one of them going on to claim domestic honors, usually Ajax.  Collectively, 48 Eredivisies, 30 KNVB Cups, and 11 Johan Crujff Shields have been won over the years.  In addition, the clubs reign from the two most populous cities in Holland, which by the way are separated by just over an hour’s drive.  Thus, this match should be intense, competitive, and ascetically pleasing to watch.  Key players to watch for, as i expect goals aplenty in this one, are Ajax’s Kasper Dolberg and Justin Kluivert and Feyenoord’s Jean-Paul Boetius and Nicoli Jorgensson.

LSB Prediction:  Boetius and Jorgensson will combine for two goals across the full 90 minutes, but Kluivert will be feeding the highly talented Dane, Dolberg, early and often on way to securing a hat trick of goals and a 4-2 will for the hosts, Ajax.  4-2 AFC Ajax

WINTER WINDOW SHORTS

Happy New Year and welcome back to the Lewnau Sports Bureau! I hope you all had an enjoyable holiday season!  With games galore taking place across Europe over the past couple of weeks, there was no other option than to feast on these top flight fixtures.  I indulged in Premier League action nearly every day, with a sprinkling of Carabao Cup, FA Cup, LaLiga, Copa del Rey, Serie A, TIM Cup, and Coupe de France action in between.  I witnessed wonder goals from unlikely heroes such as Eric Lichaj and Daniel Wass; although, the euphoria lasted all of 60 seconds as Gareth Bale struck for a quick fire double immediately after Wass.  I, also, watched Barca and City keep rolling through its domestic competition no matter who was in the starting Xl. In addition, there was plenty of verbal sparring that took place.  In England “The Special One” attacked Antonio Conte below the belt; meanwhile, Arsene Wenger attacked the FA and its officials. Wenger’s outburst resulted in a three match ban where he had to witness from the stands his bullet-less Gunners get upset by Nottingham Forest, in the Third Round of the FA Cup.  Yes, it was a glorious, glutinous, festive period!  And now, with the second half of the season getting underway, some clubs have strengthened their squads for the stretch run, eyeing trophies and building for the future.  Thus, with the winter transfer window open and marquee moves already in the books, let’s delve into three moves that have caught my eye.

Diego Costa: Chelsea FC to Club Atletico de Madrid

The first transfer on the docket was settled months ago with Diego Costa heading back to Atletico Madrid.  Since the day Chelsea Manager Antonio Conte sent a text to Costa stating that the Brazilian born striker was not in Conte’s plans for this season, the writing was on the wall.  Costa was not heading back to London and donning the Blues kit again.  However, due to Atletico’s summer transfer embargo, Costa had to wait until the winter window opened in January to officially be unveiled.  Now that he has, Costa has scored two goals and has earned himself a red card in two appearances.  So, it appears that the Spaniard is back to his menacing self again, great news for Atletico and terrifying news for the rest of LaLiga.

Philippe Coutinho: Liverpool FC to FC Barcelona

Speaking of terrifying news for LaLiga, the blockbuster deal involving Liverpool’s Philippe Coutinho and Barcelona has finally come to a close with both Barca and the Brazilian getting their way.  As for Liverpool, the club may have lost its best player, at the beginning of his prime, but at least it was for an enormous fee of $142 million.  Interestingly, with this transfer, Barcelona has now poached the Merseysiders’ top player for the second time in less than five years, as they acquired Luis Suarez in the 2014 Summer Window.  With the Azulgrana already ahead of second placed Atletico by 9 points and Real Madrid by 16 points respectively, adding Coutinho has all but secured the LaLiga title as we speak.  In addition, the acquisition of Coutinho means a more rested Andres Iniesta come the Champions League knockout fixtures. Can you smell a third Barca treble?

Virgil van Dijk: Southampton FC to Liverpool FC

Despite the gulf-sized loss of Philippe Coutinho, the winter window has been hasn't been all bad for the Reds since the stout Southampton center back Virgil van Dijk signed.  The Dutchman came at a record cost for a defender with a price tag of $75 million, however Liverpool is still in the green due to the departure of Coutinho.  Virgil is an imposing player physically and with the ball in the air.  There’s no doubt that his presence will help aid a porous Reds backline.  In addition, van Dijk can contribute offensively as well, courtesy of his heading prowess. This was highlighted in his match winning goal in the FA Cup against Merseyside rivals Everton.  With that said, long term this is a terrific move but will his acquisition payoff in the short term by increasing Liverpool’s chances of making the Top 4?  When Virgil was signed, I said absolutely.  But now?  In the post Coutinho era, I’m not so sure this singing will be enough to secure Champions League football for next season.  We shall have to wait and see.

UCL SHORTS: ROUND OF 16 DRAW

Last week, Matchday 6 proved pivotal for several top clubs around Europe.  For teams like Shakhtar Donetsk and Roma, the results of the UCL’s final round of group stage fixtures were a delight, as both squads surprisingly advanced to the knockout stage.  Meanwhile, for clubs like Napoli and Atletico Madrid the day was a bit grim as losses for each meant the Europa League Round of 32 is on the horizon, not the UCL Round of 16.  Fast forward to yesterday morning, and the Round of 16 stage was officially set via the draw as customary.  Thus, let me provide you with a quick rundown of the eight matchups set to commence in February and conclude in March.

UCL Round of 16

Juventus vs Tottenham Hotspur FC
Leg 1: Tuesday, February 13th, 2018 at Allianz Stadium in Turin, Itlay
Leg: 2: Wednesday, February 7th, 2018 at Wembley Stadium, London, England

On The Volley: This should be a fascinating set of fixtures as a sizable part of England’s upcoming World Cup core from Tottenham (Harry Kane, Dele Alli, and Eric Dier) clash with Italy’s end-of-an-era stars from Juve (Gigi Buffon, Giorgio Chiellini, and Andrea Barzagli).

FC Basel 1893 vs Manchester City FC
Leg 1: Tuesday, February 13th, 2018 at St Jacob Park in Basel, Switzerland
Leg 2: Wednesday March 7th, 2018 at Etihad Stadium in Manchester, England

On the Volley: The Swiss champions surprised most by advancing to the knockout stage ahead of Benfica and CSKA.  With that said, defeating Man City wouldn’t be anything short of a miracle as Man City is the hottest team in Europe at the moment.  So, good luck to you Bebbis.

FC Porto vs Liverpool FC
Leg 1: Wednesday, February 14th, 2018 at Estadio do Dragao in Porto, Portugal
Leg 2: Tuesday, March 6th, 2018 at Anfield in Liverpool, England

On The Volley: Another club that shocked the group stages is Porto.  Finishing ahead of last year’s Ligue 1 champions, Monaco, and Bundesliga runners-up, Leipzig, Porto’s run has been impressive.  As for Liverpool, the Reds topped Group E, but didn't seem convincing in many of the matches, excluding Matchday 6’s 7-0 thrashing of Spartak of course.  Thus, I have a sneaking suspension that this two-legged tie will surprise, thanks to the Reds shotty backline.

Real Madrid CF vs Paris Saint-Germain
Leg 1: Wednesday, February 14th, 2018 at Estadio Santiago Bernabeu in Madrid, Spain
Leg 2: Tuesday, March 6th, 2018 at Parc des Princes in Paris, France

On The Volley: Simply put, this two-legged tie will be EPIC! Hands down the best draw of the Round of 16, as 12-time (back-to-back defending) UCL champions Real Madrid square off against the best front three in club football.  It’ll be 5-time (back-to-back winner) Ballon d’Or winner Cristiano Ronaldo against the unquestioned #3 best player on the planet in Neymar Jr.  In addition, other top 11 players, according to France Football, such as Luka Modric, Sergio Ramos, Kylian Mbappe, and Edison Cavani will be taking the pitch as well.

FC Bayern München vs Besiktas JK
Leg 1: Tuesday, February 20th, 2018 at Allianz Arena in Munich, Germany
Leg 2: Wednesday, March 14th, 2018 at Vodafone Park, Istanbul, Turkey

On The Volley: The German giants must have been very good this year as Santa provided the Bavarians with an early Christmas present in drawing Besikats. Turns out that failing to top your group can actually be more rewarding than winning it.  PSG finished atop Group B, ahead of Bayern, but as aforementioned, have to play the European Champs, meanwhile Bayern face the weakest of the eight group winners.  I think it’s time UEFA change the formatting for the knockout rounds.

Chelsea FC vs FC Barcelona
Leg 1: Tuesday, February 20th, 2018 at Stamford Bridge in London, England
Leg 2: Wednesday, March 14th, 2018 at Camp Nou, Barcelona, Catalunya

On The Volley: Due to England setting a record with five clubs advancing to the Round of 16 coupled with the rule stipulating that a team can neither face a club from its country nor be drawn against the second placed squad in its group, there was a 43% chance that these two clubs would be drawn together— the highest such probability ever in the Round of 16.  On the pitch, keep an eye on the Leo Messi as he aims to score his first goal against the Blues.  La Pulga is 0 for 7 against Chelsea to date, the longest goalless streak against one club in Messi’s glittering career.  That’s bound to change, right?

FC Shakhtar Donetsk vs AS Roma
Leg 1: Wednesday, February 21st, 2018 at Metalist Stadium in Kharkiv, Ukraine
Leg 2: Tuesday, March 13th, 2018 at Stadio Olimpico in Rome, Italy

On The Volley: Neither squad was expected to reach the knockouts, but it’s guaranteed that one club will reach the quarterfinals.  On paper, most would say Roma will advance.  However,  there seems to be a Cinderella-esque feel to Shakhtar.  A club that was forced 200 miles west of its home in Donbass due to the 2014 pro-Russian conflict in eastern Ukraine.  Donbass Arena itself damaged by artillery shelling.  Unrest still ever-present in the area, thus forcing the club of Shakhtar to move west.  Now, with the Champions League Final set to take place in Kyiv, Ukraine, what a wonderful story it’d be if Shakhtar defined all odds and reached Europe’s pinnacle by playing in said match.  Only time will tell, but the Miners appear well on their way.

Sevilla FC vs Manchester United FC
Leg 1: Wednesday, February 21st, 2018 at Estadio Sanchez Pizjuan in Seville, Spain
Leg 2: Tuesday, March 13th, 2018 at Old Trafford in Manchester, England

On The Volley: Sevilla scraped through the group stage winning just two matches out of six.  Meanwhile, United cruised through Group A, winning five out of its fixtures.  It’s been some years since the Red Devils reached the knockout stage, but this squad is ready to roll past a Sevilla side that was roasted by Real 5-0, by halftime last weekend.

It’s Champions League Tuesday once more, as the sixth and final matchday of the group stage is set to kickoff this afternoon. For some, such as Barcelona, Manchester City, Tottenham Hotspur, and Besiktas, the sixth round game is all but a formality due to already being group winners.  However, for most other teams, matchday 6 will prove decisive in one’s route to either qualifying for the Champions League Round of 16 or dropping down to the Round of 32 in the Europa League.  Thus, I’ll be highlighting three matches that bear this significance in Man City vs Shakhtar, Olympiakos vs Juventus, and Barcelona vs Sporting, as well as throwing in Bayern vs PSG.  Let’s get started!

Olympiacos FC vs Juventus
UEFA Champions League: Group D, Matchday 6
Karaiskakis Stadium, Piraeus, Athens, Greece
Tuesday, Dec 5th, 2017    2:45PM EST        ESPN 3

Group D could provide us with a complete shocker when all is said and done.  Juventus, currently second in the group with 8 points, finds itself in a precarious situation as they may need a result away to Olympiacos.  If Sporting, sitting in third with 7 points, is able to beat Barcelona, then Juve needs a win themselves.  Now the likelihood of Sporting beating a Blaugrana side that has yet to succumb to defeat since the Spanish Super Cup is highly unlikely.  But, if your the Italians, do you really want to test fate by not winning in Greece?  I think not, but I’m sure the Zebras will still feel assured of themselves.  Could their ego possibly cause Juve to drop points in this match?  Absolutely, especially considering that Olympiacos, while only achieve a single point through five matches, was able to earn a draw against Barcelona in Piraeus.

LSB Prediction: In general, Juventus has plenty of firepower in Gonzalo Higuain and Paulo Dybala.  However, neither has performed to his standard so far this season.  Couple their inconstancy with a tough road venue, and there’s the making for a draw or a loss.  I’m going with the former.  1-1 Draw (Juve’s hopes now lie with Barcelona taking care of business)

FC Barcelona vs Sporting Clube de Portugal
UEFA Champions League: Group D, Matchday 6
Camp Nou, Barcelona, Catalunya
Tuesday, Dec 5th, 2017    2:45PM EST        FS1

It’s simple for the Lisbon Lions, a win and a Juve draw or loss and Sporting is headed to the Round of 16.  Will they do it?  Unlikely.  But can they?  Heck ya!  there are a couple things of note in this match.  First, Barcelona beat Sporting 1-0 in Lisbon thanks to an own goal.  If Sporting’s Coates doesn’t put the ball in the back of his own net, then FCB and Sporting would not only have drawn, but Sporting would actually be tied with Barcelona on points atop the group right now.  Secondly, since FCB has already won Group D, this match is really no more than a glorified friendly for the Catalan club.  Now Ernesto Valverde has stated that the Blaurgana will take this game seriously in aim of extending its unbeaten run, but in the back of squad’s mind, they know the stakes aren’t high.  Thus, perhaps this’ll be a Barcelona that will only reach second gear come this afternoon.

LSB Prediction: While this game is of no real significance to Barca, but everything for Sporting, I just can’t see the Azulgrana losing inside the Camp Nou.  Messi will dazzle once again, as the squad continues its roll of results. 3-1 FC Barcelona (Juventus then sends Barcelona an early Christmas card and thank you letter.)

FC Bayern München vs Paris Saint Germain
UEFA Champions League: Group B, Matchday 6
Allianz Arena, München, Germany
Tuesday, Dec 5th, 2017    2:45PM EST        ESPN 3

The significance of this match is to determine who’ll finish first and second within Group B.  And well, it’s Bayern vs PSG!  Earlier in the campaign, Ancelotti era, Bayern was roasted by the Parisians 3-0 at the Parc des Princes.  Thus, Bayern must return the favor plus another goal (4-0) to win not only the match, but also the group.  Because of this, the game should be a real up and down affair.  With the backing of the Allianz crowd, the Bavarians will likely come out like gang busters, similar to that of Barcelona during La Remontada.  Conversely, how will PSG react?  Will they wither away under FC Hollywood’s pressure, as PSG did last year against FCB? Or, has Paris SG truly learned from that historical meltdown, and will rather remain on the front foot from beginning to end?

LSB Prediction: Led by ESPN’s #1 ranked striker in Robert Lewandowski, Bayern will get off to a hot start, and level the aggregate at 3-3.  But, In the end, the Parisians will survive Bayern’s last onslaught to lose the game, but win the group. 3-0 FC Bayern Munchen

Manchester City FC vs FC Shakhtar Donetsk
UEFA Champions League: Group F, Matchday 6
Etihad Stadium, Manchester, England

Wednesday, Dec 6th, 2017    2:45PM EST        FSD

Much like FCB, Man City is in a position where this match is really no more than an exhibition.  But, for Shakhtar, this match means the world.  If the Ukrainian outfit is able to force a draw in Manchester, to Europe’s hottest team this term, then the Miners will advance to the Round of 16 and eliminate a Napoli side that is currently second in Serie A.  Led by a bevy of Brazilians, Donetsk must aim to score when given the chance, such as on counters.  Allowing Taison, Bernard, Fred, and Dentinho to create in open space.  However, the Moles mustn’t get too stretched while in attack, because if that  happens, then Man City will have struck twice before the Miners even blinked.  Thus, this match will be very tricky for Shakhtar, but for their sake, they’ll be hoping for a Citizens side that remains in cruise control, or better yet, neutral.

LSB Prediction: Shakhtar will strike early, but De Bruyne and company will answer with two of City’s own.  Thus, the Shakhtar won’t be dancing in the Champions League Round of 16, but rather get served a consolation price of the Europa League’s Round of 32.  2-1 Manchester City FC

FIFA World Cup Russia 2018 Draw

Surprise!  With the FIFA World Cup Russia 2018 Draw having commenced yesterday morning, I thought I’d provide a snapshot of the 32 team field.  I’ve broken it down into the newly released groups of eight, whilst providing an interesting snippet or two from each group.  Enjoy the read and the matches to come in the summer of 2018!

Group A: Russia, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Uruguay

On The Volley: Thanks to drawing two of the three worst ranked teams, Saudi Arabia and Egypt, in the tournament, host Russia (the worst ranked qualifying team overall) now has a real shot of advancing to the knockouts.  Conspiracy at the Kremlin?

Group B: Portugal, Spain, Morocco, Iran

On The Volley: On opening weekend, we have a mouthwatering fixture between Iberian rivals Portugal and Spain in Group B! The winner of the match will assuredly finish first in the group.  Additionally, soon to be 5-time Ballon d’Or winner Cristiano Ronaldo will square off against teammates Sergio Ramos, Dani Carvajal, and Marco Asensio, as well as El Clasico rivals Andres Iniesta, Gerard Pique, Sergio Busquets, and Jordi Alba.

Group C: France, Australia, Peru, Denmark

On The Volley: After a 36 year hiatus, the iconic red sash will shine in the World Cup spotlight once again as Peru finished 5th, ahead of Copa America Champions Chile, in the CONMEBOL qualifying table and defeating New Zealand in the World Cup Play-off.  Now that Los Incas are in, don’t be surprised if they finish second in Group C and advancing to the knockouts.

Group D: Argentina, Iceland, Croatia, Nigeria

On The Volley: Congrats to Iceland for earning its first ever World Cup berth.  Now best of luck to the Icelanders as they have the pleasure of playing against the World’s greatest-ever player in Lionel Messi.  Meanwhile, the Super Eagles must be shaking their heads in disbelief and disgust as Nigeria has now drawn Argentina for a fourth consecutive World Cup.

Group E: Brazil, Switzerland, Costa Rica, Serbia

On The Volley: In terms of quality, Group E is perhaps the deepest group of the eight.  Fifa ranked #1 Brazil will assuredly top the group, but between the Swiss, Ticos, and Eagles, not much separates the three.  However, I’m agreement with Craig Burley as I tabbing Serbia from Pot 4 to in fact finish second and go through to the knockouts.

Group F: Germany, Mexico, Sweden, South Korea

On the Volley: El Tri and its supporters must be feeling dejected right now as Mexico has drawn against the defending World Cup Winners and last year’s Confederations Cup Champions in Germany.  In addition, if El Tri is able to finish second, ahead of a Swedish side that knocked out four-time World Cup winners Italy in the UEFA Play-offs, then Mexico will have to face Brazil in the knockouts.  Thus, expect a seventh consecutive World Cup Round of 16 loss for El Tri.

Group G: Belgium, Panama, Tunisia, England

On The Volley: A round of applause for the Panama as they’ll be participating in their first World Cup!  Other than that, there’s not much to get excited about in Group G, especially since both Belgium and England will have clinched first and second before the two countries square off in Game 3.

Group H: Poland, Senegal, Colombia, Japan

On The Volley: Pot 1 Poland steamrolled through qualification thanks to none other than team captain Robert Lewandowski!  The Polish striker finished first in goals scored in UEFA’s qualifying campaign.  At the age of 30, expect Lewnadowski to seize his opportunities in front goal with his usual world class finishing skills in what could be Robert’s first and last World Cup.  I think a Golden Boot is in his future!

Shootout at the Emirates

Shootout at the Emirates

Welcome back to the Lewnau Sports Bureau!  I hope you all had a happy and hearty Thanksgiving— I know I did!  Last week provided us with some stellar Champions League action featuring a scoreless draw between Juventus and Barcelona, as well as a stunning upset of Basel over Manchester United. In addition, Cules all around the world were gifted with a huge sigh of relief as club legend Leo Messi finally and officially put pen to paper, signing his four year extension for FCB!

As for this week?  Another jammed packed fixture list is in store. Midweek will feature either league or domestic cup matches. Meanwhile, at the weekend is where we’ll find our Match of the Week in Arsenal vs Manchester United, with strictly league games.  I’ll provide you with all you need to know as we await this top 4 Premier League matchup.

In addition, Friday will be of some significance as the World Cup draw will be commencing from the Kremlin in Moscow, Russia.  Therefore, look out for LSB’s bonus article come Saturday featuring an overview of the newly released draw for World Cup Russia 2018!

Arsenal FC vs Manchester United FC
Premier League: Matchday 15
Emirates Stadium, London, England
Saturday, Dec 2nd, 2017    12:30PM EST        NBC

For nearly all of the favorites in Europe’s top 5 leagues, this week should be pretty straight forward.  The two exceptions?  Arsenal and Man United.  Two of England’s top four squads at the moment are set to clash at The Emirates, this Saturday.  What’s at stake?  For both clubs, the possibility of catching first placed Man City at this point seems remote, still, remaining in the top 4, for at least another round of fixtures, and perhaps separating one’s self from those lurking in fifth through eighth in the table is what’s to play for.

In addition, whilst not being an official derby, the Gunners and Red Devils have developed a rivalry of sorts since the turn of the century.  Since Arsene Wenger took the helm of the north London club two decades ago, the Gunners have been major players in England— winning trophies (primarily the FA Cup, but the Premier League, and League Cup as well) that would have typically been Man U’s.  Also, earning back-to-back Champions League Final berths temporarily stole the limelight off England’s most famous club hailing from Old Trafford, The Theatre of Dreams as it’s so adeptly nicknamed.  Couple this recent success with last year’s addition of Jose Mourinho managing the Red Devils (a man that feuds with just about every manager alive, Wenger especially), and a combustible tension seems to be ever present when these two sides square off.  Thus, an added intensity on the pitch and in the stands will most definitely be palpable from the opening kickoff through the final whistle. That’s a cocktail for great futbol viewing I’d say!

Who has the edge?  Statistically, you’d have to say Man United.  The Red Devils are four points ahead of Arsenal in the standings, and seem to play a more consistent game, particularly on defense and between the sticks.  However, this match won’t be played on paper, or on a computer.  It’ll be played on the pitch, inside The Emirates.  A venue that swallows visitors in, and spits them right back out.  Thus, it’ll be a daunting task for Man U to walk away with a draw, let alone a win.  In addition, in top-tier matches, Jose Mourinho likes to enforce a rather pragmatic approach to his squad’s game.  Thus, there’ll be fewer chances than normal to score for either squad.  So, the question is, who’d you rather trust to put the ball in the back of the net?  Man U’s Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial, and Romelu Lukaku?  Or, Arsenal’s Alexis Sanchez, Mesut Ozil, Alexander Lacazette, and clutch super-sub Olivier Giroud?

LSB Prediction:  Arsenal seems to be surging at the moment after beating North London Derby rivals, Spurs, 2-0 at home, followed up with a stoppage-time winner from Alexis at Burnley.  In addition, the Gooners will provide a backdrop of emotional support as they urge Arsenal on.  Therefore, I foresee Alexis, Lacazette, and Giroudm with Ozil playing provider to produce a combined three goals, earning Arsenal a crucial three points.  3-1 Arsenal FC

DERBY DAY SHORTS

Feliz martes!  What an incredible week last week was?!  Croatia, Switzerland, and Sweden advanced to the World Cup.  Yes, Sweden, not Italy, is headed to the 2018 World Cup!  The Italians were beaten 1-0 on aggregate, which means Gigi Buffon’s international career has abruptly ended.  The 40 year old was set to retire after next year’s World Cup, which would have been a record sixth appearance in the globe’s biggest sporting competition.  But that wasn’t to be.  Rather, a Zlatan-less Swiss side stole the show.  Congrats to Sweden on a remarkable World Cup qualifying run, and hats off to Buffon for a legendary international career.

Looking, onward to this week, Saturday will play provider to a bevy of scintillating club showcases.  Three in particular standout, the games in London, Rome, and Madrid, as it’s derby day in those cities.  Therefore, I have a hat trick of shorts that will tickle your fancy as we lead up to Saturday!

North London Derby
Tottenham Hotspur FC vs Arsenal FC
Premier League: Matchday 12
Wembley Stadium, London, England
Saturday, Nov 18th, 2017        7:30AM EST        NBCSN

The iconic Wembley Stadium is the backdrop for our early bird special between London rivals.  Historically the Gunners have had Tottenham’s number, however tables have turned recently.  Last season, Hotspur finished ahead of Arsenal for the first time in decades and are once again out in front of their crosstown rivals in the EPL table by four points.  The continued rapid development of Dele Ali and Harry Kane has been essential to Tottenham’s domestic and European rise of late.  Look for this deadly duo to cause Arsenal fits the duration of the match.  As for the Gunners, we’ll be waiting with bated breath to see if Arsene Wenger FINALLY starts standout striker Alexander Lacazette, in a big time match.  Whenever his number has been called, Lacazette has produced the goods.  Fingers crossed Gooners.

LSB Prediction:  With Wenger actually starting Lacazette, Arsenal will have just that, an arsenal of offensive firepower.  Still, Tottenham has been playing with confidence and a sense of assured victory this season, thus, it’ll be Dele’s day as the Hotspur brand Arsene’s Arsenal.  3-2 Tottenham Hotspur FC

Derby della Capitale
AS Roma vs SS Lazio
Serie A: Matchday 13
Stadio Olimpico, Rome, Italy
Saturday, Nov 18th, 2017        12:00PM EST        beIN SPORTS

For lunch, we’ll see local rivals Roma and Lazio square off in the shadows of Saint Peter’s Square.  Separated by just a point in the Serie A standings, this edition of Derby della Capitale will be a battle for more than just pride as they jockey for Top-4 positioning. For Lazio, Ciro Immobile has been the offensive leader.  The Italian international leads the league in goals this season with 14, doubling Roma’s leading scorer Edin Dzeko’s total of 7.  In addition to Ciro’s sharp shooting, he’s assisted on six occasions, which is best in Serie A.  Therefore, Roma will have it’s work cut out for them defensively.  Keep an eye on Greek international Kostas Manolas, as the center back will try to slow down Ciro.

LSB Prediction:  Both clubs have gotten off to good starts in league play, as well as on the European stage.  With that said, I just feel like Lazio is in the midst of a magical season that can see them qualify for the Champions League for the first time in ten years.  Thus, Ciro will strike twice en route to a Lazio win.  1-2 SS Lazio

El Derbi Madrileno
Club Atletico de Madrid vs Real Madrid CF
LaLiga: Matchday 12
Wanda Metropolitano, Madrid, Spain
Saturday, Nov 18th, 2017        2:45PM EST        beIN SPORTS

Lastly, for happy hour we have the match of of the weekend.  It’s Atletico vs Real from the new state-of-the-art Wanda Metropolitano!  While Wanda dazzles outside, inside, and around the pitch, things haven't been so shiny on the field of play.  The Rojiblancos have yet to settle in at home, as they’re still in search of the form and home field advantage that came whilst playing at the late Vicente Calderon.  Will this be the match where Wanda gets broken into properly?  Or, will the city rivals, Real, produce a christening of their own?  Luckily for Atleti, the Galacticos haven’t been very Gala-esque this season.  One player in particular has been horrendous in LaLiga this term.  Can you guess who?  Yup, the one and only, Cristiano Ronaldo.  The controversial 2017 UEFA and FIFA BEST Player of the Year, has just one goal in 48 attempts in league play.  To put that stat into proper context, generational rival Leo Messi would have to miss his next 507 shots to equal Ronaldo’s pathetic scoring rate of 2.08%.  Yikes!

LSB Prediction:  Despite the slow starts for Atleti and Real, they’re still tied for third in LaLiga, but only one point adrift of 5th.  Thus, much like Roma vs Lazio, this match means more than just bragging rights.  The fight for a top-4 finish and a stay within 3 matches of FC Barcelona is on the line.  Therefore, I must go with Ronaldo and Real.  It’s just a matter of time before Cristiano breaks out of this uncharacteristic slump, and what better game to do it in.  After all, he just bet his teammates that he’d win the Pachichi.  1-3 Real Madrid CF

FIFA WCP Shorts

Welcome back to the Lewnau Sports Bureau!  After a week off, I’m back and raring to go!  This week and next, we’ll be immersed in November’s international break.  Nations that have already qualified for the World Cup, such as Argentina, Portugal, and Germany, as well as countries that have been eliminated, like the USA, Netherlands, and Chile, will simply be participating in friendlies.  But, for a select bunch around the world, World Cup qualifying will still be taking place.  It’s the last stage, the World Cup Play-offs, the last chance to earn a bid to the globe’s biggest event.  Thus, I’ll be providing you with four shorts focusing on UEFA’s WCP first legs, taking place Thursday through Saturday.  Without further ado, here we go!

Northern Ireland vs Switzerland
World Cup Qualifying: UEFA Play-offs
Windsor Park, Belfast, Northern Ireland
Thursday, November 9th, 2017    2:45PM EST        ESPN2

The energy and excitement around Belfast will undoubtedly be palpable as the Green and White Army aim to secure a World Cup berth for the first time since 1986!  Playing at home for the first leg, the Norn Iron will try to gain the upper hand before heading to Basel, Switzerland for leg two.  Meanwhile, the Swiss, are eyeing a fourth consecutive World Cup appearance, seeing La Nati reach the Knockout stages in two of the previous three World Cups.  On paper, the Rossocrociati are considered the better side.  Ranked 11th globally, Switzerland features standout players, such as Xherdan Shaqiri, Breel Emboli, Granit Xhaka, Ricardo Rodriguez, and  Yan Sommers, amongst many others.  Thus, the Bhoys from Belfast will have their hands full come Thursday.

LSB Prediction:  With a squad largely filled by skyBET Championship division players, Northern Ireland will not only need to feed off its home crowd, but also hope for Switzerland to perform below their belt if the Norn Iron have any realistic chance of winning this match.  Thus, I’m taking the stars from Switzerland to get the job done in Belfast as Shaqiri will steal the show.  0-2 Switzerland

Croatia vs Greece
World Cup Qualifying: UEFA Play-offs
Stadion Maksimir, Zagreb, Coatia
Thursday, November 9th, 2017    2:45PM EST        ESPN3

Playing simultaneously to the Northern Ireland vs Switzerland game is Coatia vs Greece.  To me, this match should be even more intriguing, despite the wider spread between squad rankings.  Much like Switzerland, 18th ranked Croatia feature several high profile players, most notably World Xl Luca Modric, as well as Ivan Rakitic, Mario Mandzukic, Danijel Subasic, etc.  Conversely, even though Greece is ranked just 47th in the world, they possess some fire power of their own with striker Kostas Mitrolgou and midfielder Kostas Fortounis.  In addition, defensively the Piratiko are solid via Sokratis Papastathopoulis and Kostas Manolas.  Therefore, I suspect this match and the tie as awhile will be very tight.

LSB Prediction:  This match and series will be closer than the experts think (a tip of the cap to you Lee Corso), but in the end one side has a perennial FIFA World Xl player in Luca Modric, and that’s Croatia.  Thus, the misfielding maestro will create enough comments of magic to see Vatreni get a win.  1-0 Croatia

Sweden vs Italy
World Cup Qualifying: UEFA Play-offs
Friends Arena, Solna, Sweden
Friday, November 10th, 2017        2:45PM EST        FS1

A pairing between two opposites.  Italy, the golden standard of international football, has won four World Cups and has participated in all but two editions of the competition.  Meanwhile, Sweden has never won the World Cup.  In addition, Blagult has failed to reach futbol’s elite tournament since 2006, squandering Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s international career. Sweden’s all-time leading scorer and unanimously considered greatest ever player for the team— Zlatan appeared in just two World Cup’s (2002 and 2006), both of which came before his prime at the tender ages of 20 and 24.  Now, since Zlatan retired from international football after EURO 2016, Sweden possess a good balance talented youngsters including Emil Forsberg, Victor Lindelof, and Alexander Isak, with veterans Sebastian Larrson, Andreas Granqvist, and Martin Olsson.

As for Gli Azzuri, Italy is flat-out loaded.  A nation led by all-time great goalkeeper Gigi Buffon, Italy has a lockdown defense featuring Leonadro Bonucci, Giorgio Chiellini, and Andre Barzagli.  Also, young standouts El Shaaraway, Federico Bernardeschi, and Gianluigi Donnarumma showcase the absurd depth of the present squad and highlights the blinding bright future.

LSB Prediction:  I have a sneaky suspicion of an upset here.  Buffon, eyeing one final hurrah before hanging his cleats up, will witness a Sweden blitzkrieg in Solna.  Forsberg will strike, setting up quite the spectacle for leg two in Rome. 2-1 Sweden

Denmark vs Ireland
World Cup Qualifying: UEFA Play-offs
Telia Parken, Copenhagen, Denmark
Saturday, November 11th, 2017    2:45PM EST        ESPN3

Our fourth and final match pits 19th ranked Denmark against 26th ranked Ireland.  World Cup bids have come few and far between for both nations.  Denmark has qualified just four times and missing out in 2006 and 2014.  Meanwhile, Ireland has reached the World Cup a measly  three times, with the last appearance taking place in 2002.  The Irish have come painfully close time and again in qualifying for the World Cup.  The Emerald Isle has extended it’s record for most Play-off appearances with eight.  In the previous seven occurrences, The Bhoys in Green have a 3 and 4 record.  Will it be heart break hotel once again for The Green Army?  Or, will it be sheer ecstasy for the first time in 16 years?

LSB Prediction:  With all the talk of The Green Army shooting blanks, I foresee the Danish Dynamite exploding offensively in Copenhagen.  Behind Hotspur attacking mid, Christian Eriksen, and a sub-appearance from Leipzig’s Yussuf Poulsen, there’ll plenty of Carlsberg flowing through the veins of Dane supporters all night long! 3-1 Denmark

Hat Trick Saturday

What a weekend we have in store!  With big time matches taking place across Europe this Saturday, I’ve decided to pick three games that are sure to keep you entertained morning through evening.  I’m calling it, Hat Trick Saturday!  We’ll start at the Theatre of Dreams in Manchester.  Then, we’ll make our way to the San Siro in Milan, and end our wild ride in Basque Country at San Mames!  It should be a real dandy of a day.  So without further ado, let’s get you primed for the fixtures to come!

Manchester United FC vs Tottenham Hotspur FC
Premier League: Matchday 10
Old Trafford, Manchester, England
Saturday, October 28th, 2017        7:30AM EST        NBCSN

LSB’s early bird special will should set the tone of things to come throughout the day, up and down, passionate and pacy futbol.  At least that’s what Tottenham will try to do.  Conversely, with “The Special One” toeing the sidelines, we always know that there’s a chance of a drawn-out ugly game taking place, particularly when a club of equal quality is being played against.  However, with the Premier League’s top two strikers on show at the Theatre of Dreams in Harry Kane and Romelu Lukaku, a goal is most certainly ensured.  In addition, keep an eye on the Red Devils’ goalkeeper, David De Gea.  As the world’s #1 in my eyes, he’s saved Man U time and again over the past several seasons, and this year is no different.  Expect De Gea to come up with some jaw-dropping stops once again against the Hotspur.

LSB Prediction:  With Manchester at home and De Gea in goal, I’ll give the edge to the Red Devils.  Kane and company will have their chances to score, but De Gea will refuse to concede.  In addition, Lukaku will strike courtesy of a headed cross for the game’s lone goal.  1-0 Manchester United FC

AC Milan vs Juventus FC
Serie A: Matchday 12
San Siro, Milan, Italy
Saturday, October 28th, 2017        12:00PM EST        beIN SPORTS

For lunch, we have a fixture pitting two of Italy’s most successful clubs against one another.  Juventus holds the record for most Serie A and Coppa Italia titles with 33 and 12 respectively.  Meanwhile, AC Milan olds the most European Championships of any Italian side with 7, which ranks second overall in Europe.  In addition, both Juve and Milan are tied for most Supercoppa Italiana with 7 a piece.  Couple this trophy-laden success with the match’s San Siro backdrop, and a feisty spectacle is in store.  The man to watch for is without question Leonardo Bonucci.  Currently AC Milan’s captain and starting centerback, Bonucci will be squaring off against his former club from Turin for the first time.  He was instrumental for the Zebras over the years, really anchoring the backline, which became a symbol of what Juve was all about—  lockdown defense.  In addition, keep an eye on Hakan Calhanoglu for the Diavolo and Paulo Dybala for the Bianconeri.  Two young, but incredibly talented playmakers will surely show flashes of brilliance throughout the match.

LSB Prediction:  The San Siro will be rocking, but Milan has been reeling. This is a tough one to call, as Juve has, actually, also been reeling as of late.  Calhanoglu will strike a wondrous free kick past legend goalkeeper Gigi Buffon, but in the end Dybala will have the last laugh as he braces for the Bianconeri and leaves Bonucci scratching his head.  2-1 Juventus FC

Athletic Club vs FC Barcelona
LaLiga: Matchday 10
San Mames, Basque Country, Spain
Saturday, October 28th, 2017        2:45PM EST        beIN SPORTS

The hat trick match of the day takes us to Spain, as LaLiga table setter Barcelona heads to Basque Country to take on Athletic Club.  Historically, this match has always been a fierce hard fought affair, particularly when played at San Mames.  Expect Los Leones to press high up the pitch, in an effort to force Barcelona into turnovers inside their own half.  Plenty of fouls and yellows will be distributed, as well as an attempt to slow down La Pulga.  Slowing down La Pulga is easier said than done, though.  Leo Messi currently leads LaLiga, and Europe as a whole, in goals scored this campaign.  But what else is new?  However, the key player, this match, could be Luis Suarez.  Los Pistoleros has uncharacteristically sputtered in front of goal many times this season.  If he can get things going, then an already leading LaLiga squad will become even more dangerous. It’s just a matter of time before Suarez gets off the schneid— this could be the game.

LSB Prediction:  With Ernesto Valverde coaching against his former club in Athletic, Los Leones will have a little more motivation this time around against FCB.  The San Mames crowd will be raucous at the opening whistle, but by game’s end, Leo Messi, Luis Suarez, and the rest of Barcelona will be in the ascendancy as another three points will be collected on the road.  3-1 FC Barcelona

Welcome back to the Lewnau Sports Bureau!  Last week was jammed packed with intriguing games, highlighted by Argentina earning a World Cup berth via La Pulga’s hat-trick in Quito, Ecuador!  However, things weren’t as rosy north of the equator where the United States were stunned by a hapless Trinidad & Tobago squad.  Couple that result with wins for Panama and Honduras, and the Americans suddenly were left out of their first World Cup since 1986!

At the weekend, my attention was focused on the 401 Derby in Toronto!  Why that matchup?  Whelp, I was in attendance for that match whilst vacationing in Toronto.  The venue, BMO Field, is lovely!  Located on the banks of Lake Ontario, the scenery from our second level seats was absolutely beautiful.  Also, the crowd produced a loud and energetic atmosphere with chants ringing out and red smoke being let off throughout the match.  As for the action on the pitch?  It was bit lack luster, but understandably so as 40 to 50 mile per hour winds were swirling throughout BMO Field.  Giovinco missed two penalties, but Jozy Altidore was able to strike for the game’s lone goal.  All in all, it was a great experience and one that I recommend any futbol fan to attend.

Now for the footballing action taking place this week.  It’s Champions League Matchday 4 today and tomorrow!  Thus, I’ll be focusing on two footballing shorts that’ll tickle your fancy, Real Madrid vs Tottenham and Juventus vs Sporting Lisbon!  Here we go!

Real Madrid CF vs Tottenham Hotspur FC
UEFA Champions League:  Group Stage, Matchday 3
Estadio Santiago Bernabéu, Madrid, Spain
Tuesday, October 17th, 2017
2:45PM EST        FOX Family of Networks

A Ronaldo led Real will be eyeing all three points as they face Tottenham at home today.  Typically, a win is almost guaranteed when Los Blancos are playing inside the Bernabeu, but not this year.  Madrid has lost one and drawn two at home during LaLiga play this season.  Thus, the Hotspur should not just be hoping for a result, but realistically believing that they’ll get one against the defending Champions.  In addition, this match will see current Real players in Luca Modric and Gareth Bale squaring off against their former club from London, England.  Meanwhile, Deli Alli, Tottenham attacker, will perhaps be playing against his future employer in Real Madrid.  The incredibly talented youngster has been pinned for a move to Spain’s capitol for some time.  If the move is made, it’ll likely be in a year or two.

LSB Prediction:  Both Madrid and Tottenham have earned six points from six in the Group Stage thus far.  Therefore, something’s got to give, and it’ll be Madrid showing the Hotspur who’s still the boss of Europe.  The Galaticos will run rampant on a rather impressive Tottenham defense, with Ronaldo bracing and Benzema netting as well.  3-0 Real Madrid CF

Juventus FC vs Sporting Clube de Portugal
UEFA Champions League:  Group Stage, Matchday 3
Juventus Stadium, Turin, Italy
Wednesday, October 18th, 2017    2:45PM EST        FOX Family of Networks

A bit of a surprise selection, Juventus vs Sporting is set to be a whale of a game.  After two UCL matchdays, both the Zebras and Lions are tied in Group D with three points, a win and each with a loss to Barcelona.  Thus, the two head-to-head matches could be crucial in determining who finishes second (UCL Knockout Round Spot) in the group and who finishes in third (Europa League Knockout Spot).  On paper Juve are the clear favorites with the likes of Buffon, Dybala, Higuain, and more.  However, Sporting would have earned a draw against Barca if not for an own goal.  Margins are thin yes, but Sporting has proved capable of hanging with Europe’s elite.  Therefore, keep an eye out for Dutchman striker Bas Dost of Lisbon.  He finished second in Europe last term behind the one and only Leo Messi for the Golden Shoe.

LSB Prediction:  With Juve losing at the weekend, I foresee the Zebras coming out guns a blazing.  The question will be, can Sporting withstand the early onslaught?  Logic says no, but my gut feeling says yes.  1-1 Draw

Hello everyone, we have a big evening in store for you!  One eye will be on the United States and the other eye on Argentina as the two nations aim to earn either a World Cup berth or a play-off spot.  The two matches will be held virtually simultaneously as the CONMEBOL fixture kicks off at 7:30PM, with the CONCACAF match beginning at 8:00PM.  Thus, we’ll have a 2 hour double dip of high stakes footballing bliss!  Without further ado, let’s delve into the two LSB Footballing Shorts.

Ecuador vs Argentina
CONMEBOL World Cup Qualifier: Matchday 18
Estadio Olimpico Atahualpa, Quito, Ecuador

Disbelief!  That’s the word that comes to mind when I think of the possibility of having a Lionel Messi-less 2018 FIFA World Cup.  However, this is the current situation that us fans, pundits, and most importantly the Argentina National Team are facing.  If Argentina, a team that’s lead by the best player in the world and perhaps of all-time in Messi, fails to win tonight, then there’s a strong likelihood that they’ll indeed miss out of futbol’s biggest stage.  It’s simple, win and you’re in.  Lose and you snooze.  Draw and pray for a handful of other results to fall your way.

On the surface, Argentina should beat Ecuador without question.  Not only do they have Messi, but they have a core group of players that have reached the finals of the 2014 World Cup and 2015 and 2016 Copa Americas. The Tricolor have already been eliminated from reaching the World Cup andcurrently sit in 8th place.  Meanwhile, the Albiceleste have Lionel Messi, Paulo Dybala, Angel Di Maria, and Mauro Icardi.  That’s more than enough firepower for Argentina to earn a win against such an opponent.  However, Argentina have not played well throughout this World Cup Qualifying campaign, in particular when Messi was out due to injury and suspension.  Argentina earned just seven points from those eight games.  Even so, the Albiceleste had a golden opportunity to qualify for at minimum the play-off spot in fifth place with a win at home against Peru last time out.  Argentina drew, and Messi missed an easy one in front of goal that would have sealed victory.  In addition, Argentina haven’t won in Ecuador in over 10 years, as the high altitude of 9,127 feet plays a significant role for opponents inside the Estadio Olimpico Atalhuapla.  But, Excuses not an option for Argentina anymore.  Argentina must win. Messi must win, regardless of the situation, because a World Cup without La Pulga is a World Cup not worth watching.  Perhaps a bit harsh, but damn close.

LSB Prediction:  I simply can’t believe that this upcoming World Cup will be played without an in-prime Lionel Messi.  The man that took home the World Cup Player of the Tournament award in 2014, as well as the Photo of the Year.  Yes, that picture that captured a dejected Messi staring at the World Cup Trophy after losing to Germany in the Final.  That moment, that snapshot cannot be the last image of this magisterial man on futbol’s biggest stage.  Thus, Messi will mesmerize in Quito, earn all three points and a World Cup berth!  2-0 Argentina

Trinidad & Tobago vs United States of America
CONCACAF World Cup Qualifier:  Hexagonal, Matchday 10
Ato Boldon Stadium, Couva, Trinidad
Tuesday, October 10th, 2017    8:00PM EST    beIN SPORTS

As for the Americans, things are a bit more comfortable.  A result, win or draw, and the United States will be headed to Russia.  The chances of this happening is virtually assured!  Trinidad is and will finish in dead last of the Hexagonal.  The Soca Warriors have accrued just three points over nine matchdays, thus far.  In addition, the Americans beat Trinidad 2-0 earlier in the campaign on US soil.  Combine that with the form the US team is currently in, they beat Panama 4-0 last week, and you have the makings of another win and a decisive one at that.  For all of the ebbs and flows, and highs and lows that have occurred through this final qualifying round, Team USAhave put themselves in a great position to advance.  Now it’s time to seize it, and start planning for next summer abroad.

LSB Prediction:  With Christian Pulisic pulling the strings in the attacking third, this US squad looks primed to put the ball in the back of the net each and every game.  He possess those moments of magic that quite frankly haven’t been seen before in a Red, White, and Blue kit.  Those moments of brilliance will be on display tonight as the United States finally book its ticket to the Kremlin.  3-0 United States

ORGULL CATALÀ

Welcome back to the Lewnau Sports Bureau!  I had initially planned to focus on the penultimate match of the 2018 World Cup Qualifiers for the United States and Argentina.  However, in light of recent events that swept the region of Catalunya, Spain, I’ve decided, instead, to provide my own two cents on the events.  As most of you know by now, I’m a “subway” Culé.  I may live in Metro Detroit, but as far as futbol goes, I bleed Barça colors, whether it’s the blue and scarlet of the club and the yellow and red of Cataluyna.  Today, both Club and Country— well not quite yet for the latter— are feeling the aftermath of what transpired this past Sunday.  Typically, FC Barcelona and Catalunya go hand in hand, stride in stride, endlessly and lovingly synonymous with one another.  Through this intertwined relationship, FCB became known as “Mes Que Un Club”.  More Than A Club.  This motto was never more prevalent than during the suppressive days of General Franco’s reign.  For nearly forty years Catalans in Barcelona flocked to the Camp Nou to not only watch a Blaugrana futbol match, but to temporarily escape the oppression of the Spanish government.  A government that forced Catalans to speak Castilian, not Catalan.  A government that didn’t allow Catalans to name their children with native Catalan names— Spanish names were required.  Thus, the Camp Nou became a place where natives could show their patriotism via speaking their own language and waving their Senyeras. In other words, Catalan’s were able to be Catalan.  This unity that was routinely expressed inside and around the now 99,000 seat stadium, and made the Camp Nou and FCB a symbol of hope, strength, and survival for Catalunya and it’s people.

That symbol and motto has taken a major hit in the eyes of some, perhaps in the eyes of many, this past Sunday.  As Catalunya was holding its referendum vote in regards to breaking away from Spain and becoming it’s own country, the Camp Nou was closed, well at least to its supporters, its community.  FC Barcelona requested that the scheduled game be postponed due to the vote and violence that had filled Catalunya. Barça wanted and wished not to play in respect for this inevitable milestone of a “Right to Statehood” passing vote.  But, LaLiga President Javier Tebas had other plans.  He stated that FCB must play the game on Sunday or the club would forfeit the match and be deducted an additional three points.  That’s a six point total, which if enforced would have eternal rivals Real Madrid, just one point behind Barça.  Thus, it was decided that the match would go on.

However, due to the hostility in the streets around the city and for the fact that it had been rumored that fans would storm the pitch shortly after kickoff, FCB decided to hold the match in an empty Camp Nou.  Unfortunately, much of the hostility was due to the Spanish military and police. They have been video taped on multiple occasions brutally beating, and shooting rubber bullets at many non-violent protesters, as well as slamming their way into and shutting down poll sites. Once a venue for unity, camaraderie, and a safe haven for locals, the stadium instantly become a symbol of selfish conformity and bowing down to the crown.  In other words, FCB turned it’s back on its own, or at least that’s how many Catalans felt.  According to these Catalans, the stadium should have been open that day, but not for a match. Instead, it should have served as that safe place to share and celebrate Catalan pride and patriotism.

The fallout from choosing to play the game, and in front of lonely seats, has been significant and widespread.  Included in the unimpressed, are two FCB board members.  These men turned in their resignation and stated that FCB is “Just another club, not more than a club any longer”.  But, is this a fair stance to take?  Did Barça truly turn its back on it’s Catalan people?  Is FCB really “just another club”?  Unequivocally, I say NO!

In reality, FCB was in a no win situation, and the club did the best it could to service the interests of both the supporters and futbol team.  As, Barcelona’s wish to play on another day was denied by right wing monarchist Javier Tebas, if they did play with open doors, the threat of thousands— perhaps tens of thousands, of people storming the pitch was too risky a situation for fans, players, officials and staff. Therefore, the Camp Nou, out of safety, had to be locked down from the attending supporters.  Now, if they chose not to play at all, FCB would have to forfeit 6 points in the table, throwing away all that they have worked for this year.

In the end, playing the match was the right decision, even though the Camp Nou was closed to its own on perhaps Catalunya’s most historic day.  But guess what, there’ll be more games at the Camp Nou, with the most recent being a Champions League fixture set for October 18th.  On that day, which will be several weeks removed from this, I firmly believe that the Camp Nou will be jam packed with Culés.  They’ll be expressing their truest selves once again, with vigor and passion unlike ever before.  In addition, if Barça end up winning LaLiga this year, the club and the Blaugranes will essentially get the last laugh as they’d beat the King’s club in Real Madrid.

P.S.  Kudos to Gerrard Pique who once again stood up for Catalunya, but also for his club.  After partaking in Sunday’s vote, he proceeded to perform his duties for FCB even though he preferred to not play.  In addition, he stated that he’d step away from the Spanish National Team if his coaches, staff, or teammates feel that he’s a problem.  A selfless act I’d say.  Hopefully this won’t be the end to Pique’s international career.  He’s a class act and a supremely talented center back that should be starting beside Sergio Ramos come World Cup Russia 2018.  He’s taken countess jeers from fellow Spaniards, and still puts on the La Rojo kit.

It’s another Champions League Tuesday!  That means only one thing, it’s time for some UCL Shorts!  Matchday 2 will be taking place across Europe today and tomorrow.  I’ve highlighted three matches that will undoubtedly tickle your fancy!  Borussia Dortmund vs Real Madrid.  Atletico Madrid vs Chelsea.  Bayern Munchen vs Paris Saint Germain.  So without further ado, let’s delve into these marquee fixtures. They’ll surely have us fanatics replicating Fenerbahce’s passionate Turkish support seen at the weekend (cue video of fan punching screen during Fenerbahce vs Besiktas match)— well, maybe not that passionate.

Borussia Dortmund vs Real Madrid CF
UEFA Champions League: Group Stage, Matchday 2
Signal Iduna Park, Dortmund, Germany
Tuesday, September 26th, 2017 2:45PM EST FOX Sports | ESPN

The premier fixture of the day!  Dortmund and Madrid square off in the Group Stage for the second consecutive season.  The Whites may have won the Champions League last year, but the Black and Yellows got the better of Real during the the Group Stage.  Dortmund recorded a win and a draw over the two legs, which went a long way into securing a first place finish ahead of Madrid in Group F.  Will this go around be any different?  Dortmund is currently in fine fettled form as BVB are sitting atop the Bundesliga.  Meanwhile, Madrid has stubbled out of the gates domestically as Los Merengues are positioned fourth in LaLiga (7 points behind Barcelona).  Thus, this match has all the making of deja vu.  The key men to watch for Real are Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale.  Since returning from suspension two matches ago, Ronaldo is 0 for 180. CR7 missed a whopping 11 shots in the home loss to Real Betis.  As for Bale,  he too hasn’t let the house on fire either.  Gareth showed off his cheetah-esc speed in route to his goal against Real Sociedad, but outside of that the Welshman hasn’t done much of anything.  On the flip side,  American Christian Pulisic has been tearing up Germany with goals and assists.  But, can the teenager produce the goods against Los Vikingos?  I’m not quite sure.

LSB Prediction:  The famed Yellow Wall will be ever-present on the banks of the Rhine come Tuesday night.  The intimidating atmosphere always poses a threat to intruders, Real Madrid included.  However, I simply don’t believe that Cristiano will be dormant three matches on the bounce.  Thus, I expect two thunderous finishes from the Portuguese international.  In addition, Gareth Bale will act like he’s the firing breathing dragon once again with an assist and goal to his credit.  3-1 Real Madrid CF

Club Atletico de Madrid vs Chelsea FC
UEFA Champions League: Group Stage, Matchday 2
Estadio Wanda Metropolitano, Madrid, Spain
Wednesday, September 27th, 2017 2:45PM EST FOX Sports | ESPN

On Wednesday, we have two dynamite games.  First up is Atletico vs Chelsea.  This will be the first of many Champions League fixtures to be played inside the brand new Wanda Metropolitano.  This stunning state of the art facility, which houses the the Red and Whites, has already been selected to host next season’s Champions League Final. In addition, the stadium will also be home to Diego Costa come January of 2018.  Yup, the former Atletico and current Chelsea striker is headed back to Madrid come the opening of the winter transfer window.  Thus, this match has been dubiously called by some the “Diego Derby”, even though he won’t actually be playing come Wednesday night.  As for players actually set to take the pitch, look no further than Madrid born Alvaro Morata.  The Chelsea striker’s cleats are cooking as he fired home a hat trick this past weekend against Stoke City.  Therefore, the matchup to watch out for is indeed Morata vs Jan Oblak.  Atletico shot-stopper Oblak is LaLiga’s best goalkeeper and one of the finest in the world.  Who’ll rise to the occasion in this game?

LSB Prediction:  As aforementioned, this will be Wanda’s first UCL match.  Thus, the Atletico crowd will be suffocating, and the Rojiblancos will be in top gear.  It’ll be a scoreless night in Morata’s Madrid return as Oblak and his stout defense will shut Chelsea down.  And as for Diego Costa, you know he’ll be smiling at home.  Who knows, he may even upload a video to social media for all to see.  1-0 Club Atletico de Madrid

Paris Saint-Germain vs FC Bayern Munchen
UEFA Champions League: Group Stage, Matchday 2
Parc des Princes, Paris, France
Wednesday, September 27th, 2017 2:45PM EST FOX Sports | ESPN

Last, but certainly not least, it’s PSG vs Bayern!  This has game will perhaps be the best of the bunch!  Les Bleus new look front three in Kylian Mbappe, Edinson Cavani, and Neymar Jr. will finally get a stern challenge in the Bavarians.  Everyone wants to see if PSG has the goods to take the next step— become one of Europe’s elite.  Despite it being still early days for PSG’s new three pronged attack, this match against Bayern will certainly provide an inkling od the games to come.  As for FC Hollywood, Robert Lewendowski is the go-to-guy per usual.  If you feed him the ball, the ball tends to stroke the back of the net.  Lewandowski has been scoring at such a clip over recent seasons that he’s even been dubbed Lewangoalski as of late! This fixture is destined to be a spectacle in City of Lights.  Still, who’ll shine brightest?

LSB Prediction:  The Parc des Princes will be electric come kickoff.  With baited breath, we’ll all be waiting to see Neymar, Mbappe, and Cavani light up the Parisian sky, but the Bavarians have other plans.  PSG’s trident will be stifled by German internationals Matts Hummels and Jerome Boateng.  To cap things off, Lewandowski will net a brace and the Bavarians will be celebrating Oktoberfest on the flight back! 2-0 FC Bayern Munchen

LSB BONUS SHORT | DERBY DAY

Bonus!  Set to kickoff this Saturday are two derbies that are flying under many people’s radar, but not mine.  In Turkey, we have an Istanbul Derby; and in Scotland, it’s the Old Firm Derby!  Thus, I’ve provided you with two Bonus Shorts that are sure to wet the whistle this weekend.  Enjoy!

Rangers FC vs Celtic FC
Ladbrokes Premiership, Matchday 7
Ibrox Stadium, Glasgow, Scotland, United Kingdom
Saturday, September 23rd, 2017    7:00AM EST

Our early bird special is the heated Old Firm Derby pitting Rangers against Celtic!  By far Scotland’s two most dominant clubs, these two teams are set to square off for the first time this season.  Per usual, the Hoops are first in the Scottish League through six games.  They’ve won 5 and drawn 1.  Meanwhile, Rangers are currently sitting in third place, 5 points adrift of eternal rivals Celtic.  Last season, the Teddy Bears must have been pulling their teeth out watching Celtic romp through the league and the two domestic cups, on way to an unbeaten season.  That’s right, the Bhoys went34-4-0 on way to winning the League.  As well as steamrolling through the Scottish Cup and Scottish League Cup.  This year though, Rangers are hoping for better fortunes.  If that’s to come to fruition, a win at home against rivals Celtic is a must.  In order to accomplish this feat, the Teddy Bears will need to tame the Celts three headed attacking monster: Moussa Dembele, Leigh Griffiths, and Scott Sinclair.  In addition, Rangers must be effective on the counter attack.  Look for youngster Alfredo Morelos to be the one finishing off said counters as he’s scored 6 goals from 6 League matches thus far this season.

LSB Prediction: On paper Celtic should win this one, but in reality it’s Scotland’s biggest derby and one of the fiercest in the world.  Thus, through Morelos, Rangers will get on the board early, putting pressure on the Hoops.  But, over the course of the game, the trident of Dembele, Griffiths, and Sinclair will simply be too much for Rangers to handle.  By game’s end, the the Teddy Bears will ultimately be forced into hibernation.  3-1 Celtic FC

Fenerbahçe SK vs Beşiktaş JK
Süper Lig, Matchday 6
Şükrü Saracoğlu, Istanbul, Turkey

Saturday, September 23rd, 2017    12:30PM EST

Just after noon, the second derby delight is on tap as Beşiktaş squares off against city rivals Fenerbahçe! These two Istanbul clubs have faced each other 343 times over the past 93 years.  During this period, the meetings have been rather even.  Fenerbahçe has a slight lead in wins with 130 to Beşiktaş’ 123, but an additional 90 matches have been drawn.  With that said, based on Beşiktaş’ results of recent seasons, I’d say the Black Eagles are favorites this time around.  The Black and Whites are back-to-back Süper Lig Champions, and currently tied on points with another Istanbul rival Galatasaray atop the table this campaign.  Fenerbahçe meanwhile is five paces behind Gala and Beşiktaş in eighth place.  However, as aforementioned, derby matches have a way of evening things out, especially with the Yellow Canaries playing in front of a home crowd.  Thus, look for Dutchman Robin Van Persie and Brazilian José Fernandão to be threats in the box for Fenerbahçe.  As for Beşiktaş, talented Benfica loanee Talisca and Álvaro Negredo will pose a stern challenge for the Canaries’ Martin Škrtel throughout the full 90 minutes.

LSB Prediction:  There perhaps isn’t a more imposing home field advantage in Europe than that of an Istanbul crowd.  Whether it’d be Fenerbahçe, Beşiktaş, Galatasaray, or even İstanbul Başakşehir, the fans that fill the stadiums possess a euphoric, raucous, and borderline threatening atmosphere from the second they take their seats.  Thus, the Canaries will definitely feel as though they have a 12th man on the pitch.  Therefore, I foresee old timer Van Persie and fellow forward Fernandão coming up with the goods, and converting twice.  Meanwhile, the Slovak Škrtel will stymie the Black Eagles.  2-0 Fenerbahçe SK

RUMBLE ON THE RHINE

FC Schalke 04 vs FC Bayern München
Bundesliga, Matchday 5
Veltins-Arena, Gelsenkirchen, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany
Tuesday, September 19th, 2017    2:30PM EST    FS1

Happy Tuesday everybody, and welcome back to the Lewnau Sports Bureau!  Last week certainly lived up to the billing as a Lionel Messi led Barcelona strolled past Juventus 3-0.  Cristiano Ronaldo looked eager to be back on the pitch, and he didn't disappoint with a brace of his own.  Meanwhile, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur represented England well in 3-0 and 3-1 wins respectively.  This week, despite no European action, is filled with some high profile matches both midweek and at week’s end.  But, perhaps none more important than Tuesday’s clash between Schalke and Bayern in the Bundesliga.  Therefore, I’ll provide you with in-depth analysis of each club, and its position within the league table as we build up to tonight’s high stakes fixture from Veltins-Arena.

Schalke’s Impressive Start

Expectations for the Royal Blues year in and year out should be a Top 6 finish at minimum, ideally a Top 4 finish.  Essentially, this means European competition qualification.  Well, last year the Miners failed to meet this requirement as the club limped and labored through the German league campaign to a 10th place finish.  Thus, despite the high standards of securing a champions League or Europa League spot, this year the realistic expectations of what the squad can achieve was reeled back a bit.  Then, the 2017-18 Bundesliga campaign kicked-off.  Matchday 1 saw Schalke dispatch last season’s runners-up RB Leipzig 2-0!  An early eye opener there.  Could this be a new and much-improved club from a year ago?  Or, is this just a blip on the radar?  Then, after matchday 2, supporters and pundits are thinking it’s the latter, as the Royal Blues got served a reality check in a 1-0 loss to Hannover.  But, instead of having the bad result snowball like last season, Schalke processed to win its next to fixtures.  The Miners beatStuttgart 3-1, followed by Werder Bremen 2-1.  Thus, it’s been a good start to the new campaign for the Royal Blues as they’ve taken 9 points out of 12.  It appears that Schalke is back to its royal ways of winning, but tonight’s match against mighty München will tell a truer tale of where the club is and where it still needs to go.  Win or lose.

Bayern’s Sluggish Start

Speaking of expectations, none are higher in Germany than for Bayern München.  The Bavarians have won the league (27), DFB-Pokal (18), DFL-Supercup (6), and DFL-Ligapokal (6)  in record totals.  Thus, for fans and pundits alike, Bayern winning the the Bundesliga is not just an expectation it’s a given.  FC Hollywood has won each of the past five league titles, but this year could be a different story.  Through four matchdays, FCB has already dropped three points courtesy of Hoffenheim’s 2-0 win over the Bavarians.  Interestingly, Hoffenheim was one of only two teams to beat Bayern all of last season, the other being Der Klassiker rivals Borussia Dortmund.  However, despite the absurd talent that is in the squad, this team is in the midst of a transition of sorts.  Long time captain Phillip Lahm and midfielding maestro Xabi Alonso retired at the end of last season.  In addition, while star studded, veterans such as Arjen Robben and Franck Ribery are slowly becoming a little one in the tooth.  Often times we’re seeing the Dutchman and/or Frenchman being subbed off, not able to go the full 90 minutes any longer.  Also, while perhaps underrated during his time at Bayern, the absence of Douglas Costa has played role as well.  His blistering pace up and down the flanks created added scoring opportunites for Robert Lewandowski and “shell of himself" Thomas Muller.  These moments are void now.  Lastly, despite the squad losses and aging veterans, the Bayern board didn’t splash it’s riches on top-billing players over the summer window.  Instead, to the chagrin of star striker Lewandowski, Bayern CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge decided to take a frugal approach to retooling the club.  Bringing in less expensive and lower-profile players.  Only time will tell wether the change in signing philosophy will pay-off or not.  But as for now, Bayern faces a tough test against a stern Schalke tonight.  Can the stars shine once again for FC Hollywood?

Bundesliga Table

Currently, Bayern and Schalke are tied on points with 9 apiece.  A tally that is good for third and fourth respectively, and just one point of the pace of table setters BVB and Hannover.  Thus, this match is of significant importance.  A win for either club could mean a first place position after matchday 5, but at the very least would allow said club to keep pace with the leaders.  Conversely, a loss or draw would likely result in a bigger hill to climb in an effort to get to the top of the table.  For Bayern in particular, winning the league is a must, so as is this fixture.  As for Schalke, absolutely the club and supporters would love to win the league, but a top 4 finish is what’s of necessity for the Miners at this point.  Therefore, you’ll likely see Bayern attack at will, while Schalke packs it in and plays for the draw, and hopes for a counter-winning goal.

Robert Lewandowski is the go-to-guy for the Bavarians.  The Polish striker is of elite quality, and deemed one of the best players in the world according to many including peer Cristiano Ronaldo.  He currently leads the Bundesliga with 5 goals through four matches, including a brace last time out against Mainz.  In addition, keep an eye on teammate Joshua Kimmich, as he leads the Bundesliga in assists with 3.  As for Schalke, youngsters Breel Embolo and Leon Goretzka could be vital.  Goretzka, vice-captain, is a do-it-all midfielder that’s capable of creating offensively whilst still disrupting opposition flow from a defensive point of view.  Embolo meanwhile, has all of the tools and physical ability to be a top-level striker.  At still a tender age of 20, the Swiss international has loads of pace and power to run past and bully by defenders.  Thus, on the counter-attack and in set piece situations, Breel can be a beast.

LSB Prediction

The Veltins-Arena will surely be rocking tonight, as two Top 4 teams square off on the banks of the Rhine.  Bayern lost it’s first big road test of the season, meanwhile Schalke has shown the quality and desire to win the big match at home via the RB Leipzig fixture.  Thus, I suspect that the game will be decided late-on.  Goretzka and Embolo will have done all they could, even managing to get one past Manuel Neuer, but in the end Lewandowski will produce a quick fire double down the stretch to see the Bavarians sneak 3-1 FC Bayern München
