UCL SHORTS

Since Real Madrid claimed its record 12th European Championship this past June, futbol fans around the globe have been counting down the months, weeks, days, and hours until matchday 1 of the 2017-18 Champions League Group Stage.  Today, I can officially say that the wait is over!  Eight fixtures are slated for today, and eight more on Wednesday.  All matches will be showcased on the FOX family of networks in the States, with 2 games to be televised on FS1 and two on FS2.  Thus, I’ll provide you with four UCL Shorts that are sure to excite as the new season is set to commence!

Manchester United FC vs FC Basel 1893
UEFA Champions League: Group Stage, Matchday 1
Old Trafford, Manchester, England, United Kingdom
Tuesday, September 12th, 2017    2:45PM EST    FS1

After a one year reprieve, the Red Devils are back in their rightful place.  Champions League competition.  Despite finishing outside of the Premier League Top 4 last season, Man United still qualified for Europe’s coveted tournament through winning last year’s Europa League.  Led by Paul Pogba, United was able to beat Ajax in the Final 2-0, and earn MUFC it’s first Europa League crown and an automatic berth to this terms UCL Group Stage.  Fast forward to the present, the Red Devils appear to have built upon that success, as the club is currently joint top of the young EPL season.  Key additions in striker Romelu Lukaku and defensive midfielder Nemanja Matic have proved dividends so far domestically, but will that translate in Europe?  We’ll see.

As for Basel, the Swiss Champions are making their eighth consecutive UCL appearance after completing a domestic double last season.  Over the previous seven campaigns, Basel has reached the Round of 16 on two occasions, whilst finishing third in the group four times and limping to last place once.  Thus, a third or fourth placed finish is likely this go around, especiallyconsidering that Manchester United and Benfica are in the group.  CSKA Moskva is the third opponent.  A club that is probably even with RotBlau.  But, if FCB is able to earn a draw at the famed Theatre of Dreams on opening night, that could spring some moment into Matchday 2.

LSB Prediction:  It’s the Theatre of Dreams!  Manchester’s magical setting, and one that provides star-studded performances.  I expected nothing else as the new UCL campaign get started.  Lukaku will brace and Nemanja will disrupt RotBlau’s offensive flow.  With that said, Keep an eye on Basel’s Taulant Xhaka.  Taulant is the brother of Arsenal midfielder Granit Xhaka.  Taulant is a talented midfielder himself, and he’d love nothing more than to wound one of Granit’s domestic rivals.  3-0 Manchester United FC

FC Barcelona vs Juventus FC
UEFA Champions League: Group Stage, Matchday 1
Camp Nou, Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain
Tuesday, September 12th    2:45PM EST    FS2

Matchday 1’s main event!  FCB vs Juve is must-see tv.  These two clubs have produced knockout punches to one another in recent history.  In 2015 the Blaugrana beat Juve 3-1 in the Champions League Final, en route to claiming a Treble of trophies.  Then, in 2017 it was Juve’s turn.  The Zebras dispatched the Azulgrana in the Quarterfinals with a thorough 3-0 aggregate score on way to the Champions League Final appearance.  Therefore, this fixture won’t be short of subplots.  As for subplots, Juventus and Barcelona have each lost a key cog to said squad.  For Juve, Leonardo Bonnucci has departed Turin for rivals Milan.  Meanwhile, Neymar Jr left for the City of Lights.  It’ll be interesting to see how each club is able to cope with said loss against top level competition.  Thus, pay close attention to replacements Ousmane Dembele of Barcelona and Benedikt Howedes and/or Mattia De Sciglio of Juventus.  In the end though, we all want to see Messi vs Buffon!  One of the last few chances to see the two living legends square off before Buffon’s now fast approaching retirement. Can Messi finally get a ball past the Italian #1?

LSB Prediction:  Through three LaLiga matches, Barcelona has looked surprisingly strong.  The Catalans have taken all 9 points and set a top the table, four points clear of rivals Real and Atletico Madrid.  Messi has been magisterial, and the defense has collected three clean sheets.  Couple that with this showdown taking place at the Camp Nou, I expect to see the LOL get he better of Buffon and his new look backline. 2-1 FC Barcelona

Real Madrid CF vs APOEL FC
UEFA Champions League: Group Stage, Matchday 1
Estadio Santiago Bernabéu, Madrid, Spain

Wednesday, September 13th, 2017    2:45PM EST    FS2

Tomorrow we have two more delights to indulge in.  First up, it’s the Back-To-Back Defending European Champions Real Madrid vs Cyprus’ own APOEL!  Ronaldo is back for this match, as his 5 game suspension doesn’t include UEFA fixtures.  That means one thing.  Goals galore for the Galaticos. Madrid has sputtered in LaLiga recently.  Largely due to Ronaldo’s absence, goals haven’t been as plentiful, thus Wednesday will be a nice change for the impatient Madradista crowd.  APOEL meanwhile is simply delighted to participate in such a competition after failing to qualify in each of the past two seasons.  In addition, a third place finish and qualification to the Europa League Round of 32 is minute, as the other two clubs in Group H are Borussia Dortmund and Tottenham Hotspur.  Good luck APOEL!

LSB Prediction:  The Bernabéu will be rocking as the Blancos will throttle the Legend whilst never needing to reach top gear.  Ronaldo will strike for three, Asensio will bag a brace, and Benzema will even sneak one past the ‘keeper.  6-0 Real Madrid CF

Tottenham Hotspur FC vs BVB 09 Borussia Dortmund
UEFA Champions League: Group Stage, Matchday 1
Wembley Stadium, London, England, United Kingdom
Wednesday, September 13th 2017    2:45PM EST    FS1

The last match on the docket pits England vs Germany!  Tottenham vs Dortmund!  The Hotspurs has been Premier League Runners-Up in each of the past two seasons.  Lead by a talented, but still young British core of Harry Kane, Dele Ali, Eric Dier, amongst others, the Hotspur will simply get better and better over the next decade.  Couple that youth with experienced Internationals such as Hugo Lloris, Toby Alderwiereld, and Christian Eriksen, and you get a European club contender…for the present as well as future.  As for Dortmund, Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang is the unquestioned go to guy.  With elite pace and smooth finishing, Aubameyang is always a threat for opposing defenses.  But the man, or better that I say boy, that you should hone in on for the Black and Yellows is the United States own Christian Pulisic!  The teenage sensation has taken the Bundesliga and Champions League by storm.  Last season, Pulisic became the youngest ever player to score in Europe’s top competition at the tender age of 17.  Now as he approaches his 19th birthday on September 18th, the American is turning into the fulcrum of Borussia’s attack.  Needless to say, this match will be great watch of up-and-coming talent, as well as a showpiece for tried and true veterans yearning to take their clubs to the next level.

LSB Prediction:  Tottenham’s temporary home, Wembley Stadium, has been a house of horrors at times.  8 losses out of 12 matches to be exact.  Coincidence? Probably.  However, with perhaps the Bundesliga’s most electric attack coming to Wembley, I suspect that Tottenham’s Wembley woes continue.  The Hotspur to get doubled up at home courtesy of Pulisic and Aubameyang.  4-2 BVB 09 Borussia Dortmund

DEMBELE'S DEBUT

DEMBELE'S DEBUT

What a stunner we had last Friday?!  In the shadows of New York City’s stunning skyline, the United States were flying high coming into the Hexagonal fixture against Costa Rica.  But, the Ticos, who actually had a favorable supporting contingent, ended the Americans 14 game unbeaten streak in decisive fashion.  It started by knocking Christian Pulisic off his game with continued physicality and subsequent fouls.  It ended via sublime counter attacking football, leading to a 3-0 finish.  Now, the US Men’s National Team is in for a dog fight down the stretch of the CONCACAF World Cup Qualifiers.  As for the CONMEBOL match of the week, Argentina dominated possession, but simply couldn’t break down the Uruguayan backline.  Leo Messi did all he could, with his box to box run. Although it ended in a pulldown, shirt tear, summing things up in the 0-0 draw.

This week, it’s back to club football.  One match in particular stands out, and that’s El Derbi!  Barcelona versus Espanyol!  I’ll get you primed for this Saturday’s fixture highlighting the current state of Barcelona’s club, key players set to take the pitch, and Lewnau Sports Bureau’s match prediction.

FCB: State of the Club

According to the LaLiga table, Barcelona is in great shape and form as they’ve taken all six points from the first two matches of the season.  However, that’s far from the case.  As we all know by now, Neymar Jr. has left the club in stunning style.  That alone has lead to endless questions regarding the club’s board.  How could the club let this happen?  Why wasn’t Neymar’s release clause set at or around $1 billion, such is Cristiano Ronaldo’s?  Was there an uneasy relationship between Neymar Jr. and Sr. with the Catalan club? If so, why? Etc.  Couple his world record transfer departure with the fact that nearly 70% ($147 million) of that money was used to fund a 20 year old Frenchman in Ousmane Dembele.  A player who was purchased just a year ago from Stade Renneis for $15 million and is going to pay the youngster $12 million annually.  A working wage that isn’t too far off the pace of what world class Neymar was getting.  On top of this, Barcelona purchased Brazilian international Paulinho for $40 million from Guangzhou Evergrande. Wondering where this club takes the pitch?  China!  It doesn’t end there though.  On top of this their were countless other failed transfers, such as Andre Gomes, Lucas Digne, Aleix Vidal, and quite frankly Arda Turan. Additionally, the epic fail of not purchasing Philippe Coutinho from Liverpool, nor securing any of the other players that were involved in the possible deadline day dealings takes the cake.  Once Barcelona had finally conceded that the Catalan club wasn’t going to get the mercurial attacking midfielder, the board shifted gears to Mesut Ozil and Angel Di Maria.

Di Maria mind you plays for PSG.  Yes, the same Paris club that bought Neymar for $220 million.  Well, it had been reported that in an attempt to lower the cost of the Neymar transfer, PSG was willing to throw Di Maria into the deal.  Barcelona said no.  Then come deadline day, the Catalans go back to Paris in an attempt to purchase Di Maria for roughly $40 million.  PSG, knowing that they held all the cards, demanded $60 million.  The deal was dead.  As for Ozil, that move was never going to work in such a short period of time.  The caveat, with this potential move, was that former club Real Madrid had a buyback option in Ozil’s clause in case of a sale for the player.  With the buyback, the Madridistas would have been given 48 hours to decide whether to buy the German or let the Arsenal to Barcelona deal go through.  So, with less than 24 hours left in the window, you know rivals Madrid would have enacted their right to filibuster until time simply ran out in the summer window.

Oh, and one more thing.  Despite the President Josep Maria Bartameu and his board going on record stating that living legend Leo Messi’s contract extension has been signed, it really hasn’t.  The Argentine’s contract runs out at season’s end, and beginning January 1st, he’s free to talk to other clubs regarding a free move away from the Camp Nou.  UNACCEPTABLE!  Thus, the state of FC Barcelona is at a crossroads.  A vote of no confidence in the current board is in action now, and a move for an election is on the horizon— I hope.  A new regime, withLeo Messi’s approval, will be the only way that La Pulga pens the extension.  Ultimately, only time will tell, but as this match is set to square off, the board is facing a seismic shift. Can the squad keep an even keel?

Key Players

All eyes will be honed in on the aforementioned Frenchman, Ousmane Dembele.  After becoming the second largest transfer in club football history, the young winger will make his Blaurgana debut at the Camp Nou.  He’s taken Neymar’s #11 shirt and is slotting in on the left of Barcelona’s front three.  The question is, can he live up to the billing, both in play and spirit?  While there’s no doubt Barcelona probably paid double what Dembele is really currently worth, there’s no denying the fact that he’s incredibly talented and that the sky is truly the limit for him.  Ousmane possesses electric speed with and with out the ball, actually faster than Neymar in my estimation.  He also has a propensity to provide the assist.  Demeble produced 12 assists during last year’s German Bundesliga campaign, a total good for second in the league. The youngster, however, sometimes plays too fast, although, that is normal for players of such a tender age. Ousmane, also isn’t clinical enough in front of goal at the moment, but he surely has the potential to produce wondrous strikes, and with time his consistency will improve.

As for Espanyol, Papakouli “Pape" Diop is the man that will rustle the feathers of the Barcelona fans, as he attempts to do the same to the Azulgrana squad as well.  He’s a defensive midfielder, who seems to live on the playing edge, at least when playing against Barcelona.  Pape will be physical from the start.  You’ll see him foul players, particularly Messi, time and again.  By game’s end, Diop will have a yellow card no doubt. Still, will his defensive prowess result in a sputtered Blaugrana attack?

LSB Prediction

The first Catalan Derby of the 2017-18 season will certainly pack a punch, as always.  Both clubs will be playing for regional pride and LaLiga success.  Contrastly, this will provide another moment of unity after the terrorist attack that occurred in the city’s famed Las Ramblas.  I suspect that there’ll be a minute of silence, as well as plenty of Catalan flags waving, and chants ringing through the stadium in support of the victims, the city of Barcelona and the region of Catalonia.  On the pitch though, new recruit Ousmane Demeble and second captain Leo Messi will combine for a goal, maybe two, as Pape Diop’s efforts fall to the wayside.

2-0 FC Barcelona

SEPTEMBER STALWARTS (INTERNATIONAL BREAK)

Ecstasy inside Anfield was the theme for last week’s article, and boy did the Reds live up to the billing!  Not only did Liverpool win its two fixtures, but they did so in stunning style!  Led by Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino, the Reds dispatched Hoffenheim 4-2 and mighty Arsenal 4-0!  At the time I was writing “Anfield Ecstasy”, I thought I was making a bit of an ambitious prediction with the 4-2 score line.  In actuality however, the Reds ended up out shinning that forecast.  In truth, the 4-0 drubbing of bullet-less Arsenal, had just as much to do with Liverpool’s virtuoso performance as it did the Gunners obvious lack of commitment to their craft and their coach.  Overall though, Liverpool’s wondrous week means that they’ll be competing in the Champions League once again and are to be considered legitimate contenders for winning a 19th domestic league title.

This week, we switch gears back to international football.  World Cup Qualifiers will be taking place all around the globe, thus I’ve picked two matches that are must see.  First, a pivotal contest between Uruguay and Argentina will commence Thursday night.  Secondly, on Friday, the United States will square off against Costa Rica.  So, without further ado, let’s get you ready for the high stakes footballing action.

Uruguay vs Argentina
CONMEBOL World Cup Qualifier
Estadio Centenario, Montevideo, Uruguay
Thursday, August 31st, 2017    7:00PM ET    beIN Sports Spanish

With just four matches left to be played in the CONMEBOL WCQ and four points separating 2nd place from sixth, every point is precious.  Currently, Uruguay sits third, whilst Argentina, the world’s third best team according to FIFA, currently occupies the fifth and final World Cup slot.  With that said, only two points separate these two teams.  Thus, a win for either side would go a long way to solidifying said positions.  On the pitch, Lionel Messi will be smiling inside knowing that his club teammate, and Uruguayan hitman, Luis Suarez wont be suiting up due to a leg injury suffered in the Supercopa de Espana second leg.  But, Uruguay can still pack a punch as Paris Saint Germain’s star striker Edinson Cavani and Seattle Sounders’ Nicolas Lodeiro will be ready to test Argentina’s dynamite defensive duo in Nicolas Otamendi and Javier Mascherano.

As for the Albiceleste’s offensive firepower, look no further than the aforementioned Lionel Messi.  The five time Ballon d’Or winner and 2014 FIFA World Cup Player of the Tournament, will look to carry a squad littered with on paper talent.  I say on paper because too often Angel Di Maria and Sergio Aguero, players that are considered to be of the upper echelon in world football, seem to forget their skills in high stakes affairs.  This leaves La Pulga to carry the load all by his lonesome.  Luckily for Messi, Mauro Icardi has finally been selected to the national team squad and Paulo Dybala is available as well.  Icardi has been in fine fettled form to begin the Serie A season, scoring four goals from two fixtures.  As for Dybala, well he just scored a hat trick this past weekend.

LSB Prediction:  On paper, Argentina should win this match without question.  However, the game is played on the pitch, and in Uruguay as well.  Thus, a hard fought fixture between two of South America’s most trophy laden sides will be on show Thursday night.  But with Argentina currently flirting with World Cup omission, Messi will insure that the Albiceleste earns all three points with a late on moment of magic.  2-1 Argentina

United States vs Costa Rica
CONCACAF World Cup Qualifier (The Hex)
Red Bull Arena, Harrison, New Jersey, United States
Friday, September 1st, 2017    7:00PM ET    ESPN

It’s matchday seven of the Hexagonal.  Currently Costa Rica sits second in the standings, three points ahead of Team USA.  In CONCACAF, the top four finishers of qualifying advance to World Cup Russia 2018.  A win for either side will virtually be assured of a spot in next year’s premier footballing competition.  A loss however, particularly for the Americans, could provide some unwanted stress for the remaining three fixtures.  Remember, USA still has to play fifth placed Honduras away, and fourth placed Panama.  Panama is just one point back of Team USA, while Honduras is one game back.

Come Friday night, both squads will be at full strength, unlike this summer’s Gold Cup semifinal.  For the Ticos, Galactico goalkeeper Keylor Navas will be between the pipes.  Meanwhile, further up the field you’ll find a quartet of MLS players in Fransisco Calvo, Rodney Wallace, David Guzman, Johan Venegas, and Marco Urena.  As for The United States, the squad’s golden boy, and in my mind the country’s best player, Christian Pulisic is back in the team, as is Geoff Cameron.  Also, keep an eye out for Clint Dempsey.  He’ll likely come off the bench, but the United States co-top goalscorer is always a threat in front of goal and on set pieces.

LSB Prediction:  The match will be played in Red Bull Arena, home of the New York Red Bulls.  Therefore, a full and raucous eastern-shore crowd will be ever present.  I expect the Americans to feed off of the American Outlaw energy and produce a front-footed performance.  Pulisic will score and assist, whilst Dempsey caps the night by pushing Landon Donavon aside with his 58th career international goal.  3-1 United States

ANFIELD ECSTASY

Hello everybody, and welcome to another edition of the Lewnau Sports Bureau!  This week is loaded with red, Merseyside Red that is!  That’s right, I’ll be focusing on Liverpool’s dynamite double dip of Hoffenheim midweek and Arsenal at the weekend!  So without further ado, let’s delve into one of the Reds most crucial weeks of the year with these two footballing shorts!

Liverpool FC vs TSG 1899 Hoffenheim
Champions League Play-off, Leg 2
Anfield, Liverpool, England
Wednesday, August 23rd, 2017    2:45PM ET    FS1

On Wednesday night, Liverpool and Hoffenheim will be competing for a berth into the Champions League Group Stage.  The Reds, once England’s and Europe’s elite, is trying to claw its way back into Europe’s coveted competition for the first time since the 2014-15 season.  As for Hoffenheim, its attempting to earn a spot in the Champions League proper for the first time in club history!  Couple those tidbits with the fact that the aggregate score is a slender 2-1, in favor of the Reds, and you have yourself a match that is sure to provide the dramatics and hysteria that us fans yearn for.  Because Liverpool scored two away goals in the first leg, Hoffenheim must score at least two of their own, or Die Kraichgauer will be headed home with their heads hanging.  This is certainly achievable, as Hoffenheim possessed the ball 63% of the time in Leg 1 and created 13 shots.  The area of improvement would be finishing.  Just 4 of the 13 shots were on target, thus former Gunner Serge Gnabry and Croat Andrej Kramaric must be more clinical in front of goal.  As for Liverpool, the 5-Time European Champions need to perform better in midfield.  The absence of Philippe Coutinho has been ever present as the lack of offensive ball control and creativity has hampered the clubs’ start to this season.  Look for Captain Jordan Henderson to play a vital role in this match, as he’ll aim to disrupt Hoffenheim’s flow, as well as produce a log range effort or two.

LSB Prediction:  YNWA!  You’ll never walk alone!  This is the mantra of Liverpool and it’s faithful.  Come Wednesday night, Hoffenheim will find out exactly what that means.  It won’t be 11 vs 11.  Rather, it’ll be 11 vs 54, 085 (11 + a sold out Anfield crowd)!  There’s no way that the Reds fail to get through to the Champions League Group Stage as its final hurdle is at home.  The stadium will be rocking, Jurgen Klopp will have his men infused with his winning rage, and Captain Henderson will score a screamer to cap off a wondrous Wednesday night in Merseyside!  3-0 Liverpool FC

Liverpool FC vs Arsenal FC
Premier League, Matchday 3
Anfield, Liverpool, England
Wednesday, August 27th, 2017    11:00AM ET    NBCSN

After securing Champions League Group Stage play, Liverpool will be flying high coming into Sunday’s showdown with the Gunners.  Perhaps they will be so good, that some will say good riddance to Coutinho,  believing that the Reds can succeed long term without him.  Whelp, this match could be a real indicator as to what the Fenway Sports Group will ultimately do with its on-strike talisman.  If Liverpool produce another gem, this time against one of England’s Top 6 clubs, then Coutinho may very well be sold to Barcelona for an absurd fee of in excess of $100 million.  But, if the Reds struggle once more in the Premier League, then Coutinho may very well be forced to to don the all red kit this campaign, as FSG will feel that the club can’t win titles without him.

Meanwhile, Arsenal will be entering Anfield already wounded after a disappointing display to Stoke City last weekend.  Are we surprised though?  With Arsene Wenger at the helm, the Gunners routinely shoot blanks.  That being said, on the day, the Gunners are as good as anybody in the Premier League.  The squad is one of the deepest around with players such as Mesut Ozil, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Alexander Lacazette, Olivier Giroud, Aaron Ramsey, Petr Cech, Granit Xhaka, etc.  In addition, if Alexis Sanchez finally accepts the fact that he’s staying at the Emirates this season, then the club immediately adds its most potent piece to the club’s arsenal.  The sky’s the limit in that case, FA Cup win! In all seriousness though, Arsenal are the clear favorites to win the Europa League and are one of six teams that truly have a shot at winning the Premier League.  Thus, earning a result on the road against a legitimate Prem League rival, regardless of whether it’s a win or draw, is a real coup and something to build upon as the season unfurls.

LSB Prediction:  Neither squad is particularly stout in defense.  Therefore, I suspect that this match will see goals a plenty.  Arsenal seeking to bounce back from the lack luster outing at Stoke, will come out with plenty of energy.  Mesut Ozil will produce a sublime through ball to Lacazette for the opener, and a deft touch over Simon Mignolet for the Gunner’s second.  However, Jurgen Klopp’s gegenpress will force Mustafi and Monreal into repeated blunders at the back.  As a result, Roberto Firmino, Mohamed Salah, and Sadio Mane will run rampant for four.  4-2 Liverpool FC

REVELING REAL LEAVE BARCA BLISTERED IN SPANISH SUPER CUP

REVELING REAL LEAVE BARCA BLISTERED IN SPANISH SUPER CUP

Where should I even begin?  What an incredibly wild ride that Barcelona and Real Madrid took us on this past Sunday afternoon!  Despite the decisive and deceiving 3-1 scoreline, Spain’s leg 1 of this year’s Super Cup was epic!  We all had an inkling that this edition of the Supercopa would be special, given its an El Clasico, but the first match left us all on the edge of our seats with dropped jaws. All the while, scratching our heads as to what exactly took place once the final whistle blew.

Heading into the game, the talk for Barcelona was centered around the atomic sized crater on the left wing of Barca’s front three, after the defection of Neymar Jr.  I was cautiously optimistic when I saw that Gerard Deulofeu was given the nod to start by new Manager Ernesto Valverde.  The young Spaniard that graduated from Barca’s famed La Masia and captained Spain’s U-23 Euro squad, was bought back from Everton over the summer.  He began to flourish last season while on loan at AC Milan, and continued to grow during the Euros.  With that said, Deulofeu, was considered to be a cheap and youthful addition to round out the squad.  As we know things changed with the line-up.  Thus, he was thrust into the starting lineup on Sunday and unfortunately he did disappoint.  But, I suppose anyone and everyone that was to be chosen to start the first match of the post-Neymar era would in fact disappoint.  However, Deulofeu performed even worse than what I, fans, and pundits had truly expected from him.  Time and time again the left winger made the wrong decision with the ball at his feet.  When he should’ve dribbled in towards goal, he pulled back and waited for teammates to link up to.  When Gerard should have taken a wide open shot inside Real’s box, he, instead, took a couple of touches, waited for the defenders to approach and then fired the ball low across goal.  An ill-fated attempted that neither reached the back of goal nor connected with a lunging Leo Messi in front of net.  The list goes on, and ultimately Denis Suarez subbed him off just before the hour mark.

The poor form didn’t stop with Deulofeu, though, as things weren’t rosy at the back for La Azulgrana either.  Surprisingly, Aleix Vidal was given the start at right back over newly acquired Nelson Semedo.  I don’t know if Valverde didn’t want to throw fresh meat into a lion’s den, as this match would have been Semedo’s first official match for Barca or what, but choosing Vidal was clearly a mistake.  Vidal was overmatched by Real’s attacking threat, particularly by Isco and Bale.  It was clear that Semedo, the young former Benefica ‘back with superior defensive and comparable offensive skills, should have gotten the start.

Next up, for roasting is Gerard Pique.  Pique, who is one of the top center-backs in world football, had a night to forget.  He produced an own goal to give Real Madrid a 1-0 lead.  Then, he neither slowed down, stopped or altered Ronaldo’s long range effort, which made the game 2-1 in favor of Los Blancos.  And lastly, he had a groundhog day moment minutes later as Asensio shot a goalazo past him and Ter Stegen to put the capper on a 3-1 Real Madrid victory on Camp Nou soil. This match will go down as one of the absolute worst performances of Pique’s glittering career.

Despite all of these errors and poor performances from various Barcelona players, La Blaugrana actually had the bulk of the possession.  They controlled much of the match and really should have scored on several occasions (e.x. Busquets shooting from point blank range). Ultimately,  it was not having Neymar there that was the disconnect.  You could see the frustration oozing out of Luis Suarez, as Deulofeu and others couldn’t find Suarez the ball in opportune moments.  In addition, that frustration and lack of trust that Suarez had towards Deulofeu resulted in the Uruguayan striker cutting against the grain and into four Real players on the counter in an effort to get Messi the ball.  Whereas, instead, Suarez could have easily set up a wide open Deulofeu on the left hand side of the pitch for a one-on-one with the Keylor Navas.

In the end, this match should have been closer than a 3-1 scoreline, particularly when you consider that Madrid scored its last goal shorthanded as the club finished the game with ten men, thanks to Cristiano and his temper.  Ultimately though, leg 1 summed up the gulf that’s between these two rivals at the moment.  Real is humming along as the club is riding a wave of back-to-back Champions League triumphs, as their deadly shooting accuracy is something out of an Antonio Banderas film.  Meanwhile, Barcelona is lost in the final third, searching for answers to fill Neymar’s void and regain the mojo that made them Treble winners less than three years ago.  Will things change in leg 2? Can things change in leg 2?  We shall see.

Real Madrid CF vs FC Barcelona
Supercopa de Espana, Leg 2
Estadio Santiago Bernabéu, Madrid, Spain
Wednesday, August 16th, 2017    5:00PM ET    ESPN2

With the aggregate set at 3-1 in favor of Real Madrid, Barcelona needs a collectively dominant performance if it is to turn this Super Cup around.  Due to the fact that Los Blancos have three away goals, a 2-0 win for the Catalan side won’t be enough.  Thus, three goals is the minimum requirement.  And considering that Real Madrid haven't been shut out of a match since the 2014-15 season, Barcelona will likely need four goals to win in regulation.  Yikes!  But, when you have the world’s best player on your side in Leo Messi, there’s always a chance.  I’d suspect that Semedo will start in place of Vidal, and Denis Suarez will get the nod over Deulofeu as well.  What about Pique?  He’ll be back performing to the level that we all have come accustom to, world class.  Thus this match willbe compelling, particularly if Barca is able to score early, which I think they will.  Although, this could also be the perfect moment for Sergio Ramos to pop-up and head in the Copa killing goal.

LSB Prediction:  With Ronaldo suspended and Messi and company eyeing revenge, this match will see Barca ahead on the scoreline, but still behind on aggregate, late on.  Therefore, La Azulgrana will have all of its men pushed forward trying to get the aggregate equalizing third, but in the end it’s Ramos lumbering forward in transition and heading home the Supercopa clincher.  Hala Madrid!  2-2 Draw (Real Madrid win the Supercopa de Espana via 5-3 on aggregate)

For Real Madrid, things don’t get any easier at the weekend, as the club will once again be squaring off against its eternal rivals in FC Barcelona.  That’s right, it’s EL CLASICO!  Us fans and pundits have been blessed with a two legged El Clasico, Spanish Super Cup edition, to kick off Spain’s domestic season.  It’s been three years since we’ve last witnessed a Real Barcelona Super Cup, as Real Madrid won LaLiga and Barcelona won the Copa del Rey this past year.  Thus, this rendition is not only about beating its rival, but also about lifting the first piece of Spanish hardware for the 2017-18 campaign.  As for the play on the field, it’s expected that CR7 will finally be back from his summer holiday, which is obviously a huge boost for Los Blancos.  Conversely, it’ll be the first competitive match for Barcelona without the recently departed Neymar Jr.  Yup, Neymar is officially a Parisian after the controversial €222 million buyout clause was finally met, last week.  Thus, the void on the left side of Barcelona’s three pronged attack will surely be a point of interest for everyone watching.  In the short term, La Azulgrana will likely fill the left wing with either Denis Suarez, Arda Turan, Munir El Hadaddi or newly re-acquired Gerard Deulofeu, before ultimately bringing in a new signing such as Philippe Coutinho or Ousmane Dembele later in the transfer window.  Regardless of who gets the nod, they will have HUGE boots to fill as Neymar is regarded as the third best player in the world, behind only his former teammate Lionel Messi and Real’s Ronaldo.

LSB Prediction:  With the match taking place at the Camp Nou, the edge must go to Barcelona.  The fans will be rocking regardless, but with pent up frustration of seeing Messi’s heir apparent ditch the Blaugrana kit and Catalonian colors for a deep pocketed payday and shimmering Eiffel Towel spotlight. Expect an absolutely absurd atmosphere inside the nearly 100,000 seat stadium.  As for the Barcelona squad, the players will be eager show that they are just fine without the mercurial Brazilian, as they will feed off the home crowd and throttle the Galaticos Sunday evening.  4-1 FC Barcelona

Real Madrid CF vs Manchester United FC
UEFA Super Cup Final 2017
Philip II Arena, Skopje, Macedonia
Tuesday, August 8th, 2017    2:45PM ET    FS1

Last week, I vowed to offer up an equally memorable match to that of the El Clasico that took place on July 28th.  I chose the MLS All-Star Game, and it surely didn’t disappoint.  My wife, parents, and I were in attendance for the annual showdown between Major League Soccer’s best versus one of Europe’s premier clubs.  This go round it was back-to-back champions Real Madrid, so we knew that the MLS All-Stars would have their work cut out for them, even if Cristiano wasn’t suited up in the iconic all white kit.  And through the cold Chicagoan rain that descendedupon the stadium, fans, and players, the match produced countless scoring opportunities, brilliant saves and a pair of goals that delighted both fan bases.  With the game all square after 90 minutes, the match was decided on penalties.  While the MLS sputtered from the spot, Los Blancos appeared cool under pressure as Zinadine Zidane’s son, Luca Zidane, saved the first PK of the night from Dom Dwyer.  Giovanni Dos Santos was up next for the MLS and he clanked his effort off the crossbar, essentially cinching Real’s victory.  Instead of the BBC taking the first three kicks, it was the BBK (Benzema, Bale, and Kovacic), and they all netted with Marcelo clinching the win for Los Merengeus, on their fourth and final shot.

This week in the Lewnau Sports Bureau, we’ll be following Real Madrid across the pond and back to Europe as they face off against Manchester United in this year’s UEFA Super Cup from Skopje, Macedonia!  So without further ado, lets delve into the fixture and get you ready for tomorrow’s cup action!

What is the UEFA Super Cup?

The 46th edition of the UEFA Super Cup will feature the two richest clubs in the world in Los Blancos and the Red Devils, who also have incredible tracker records for winning tournaments. The UEFA Super Cup is a one-off event that’s held annually at a neutral site in Europe, featuring the current winners of the Champions League and Europa League.  The Champions League and Europa League are club competitions that pit top teams from across Europe against one another, to determine the best team(s) for said season.  Last year, Real Madrid won its record 12th European title when it beat Juventus, in the Champions League Final in early June, 4-1.  As for Manchester United, it won its first Europa League Title in club history by dispatching a resilient and youthful Ajax side 2-0, in late May.  Historically, Spanish sides have run supreme in this competition, winning 13 times, whilst finishing runner-up on 11 other occasions.  Barcelona stakes claim to the most victories (5) and runner-ups (4) of any club.  Therefore, Madrid will be looking to pull ever closer to its eternal rival, as a win will give the Galaticos 4 triumphs for this competition in club history.  Meanwhile, Manchester United will be searching for its 2nd UEFA Super Cup crown.

Who’ll steal the show?

There are plenty of A-listers to choose from in a fixture such as this.  For Man United, will it be the former world’s most expensive player in Paul Pogba,  or the newly acquired striker, Romelu Lukaku? Perhaps it will even be the ever improving youngster Marcus Rashford?  All of these selections would be great,  however, if David De Gea gets the nod to be between the sticks for United, then I’m going with him as Manchester’s man of the hour…..and a half.  The goalkeeping Spaniard is #1 not only for the Red Devils, but for his native Spain.  Widely regarded as one of the top three goalkeepers in the word, De Gea makes sensational, draw dropping saves look routine.  As such, over the past several seasons he’s caught the eye of his hometown club Madrid.  The Whites have tried on numerous occasions to buy him from England’s biggest club, but have yet to succeed.  Thus, this particular game seems like the right time to put the spotlight on De Gea as he’ll be facing off against his hometown and perhaps future club.  In addition, with the likes of Benzama, Bale, Modric, Marcelo, Ramos, and more, De Gea is sure to be in for a busy evening.  Will he rise to the occasion and plug the side that’s yearning for him?  Or will the moment prove to be to much and he falters under the Galactico-sized pressure?

As for Madrid, the aforementioned offensive firepower is often the focal point when dissecting rosters and deciding who’ll lead Real to victory, but the theme for today appears to be goalkeepers, thus I’ll be picking Keylor Navas as Real’s player to shine.  For as much of the attention that David De Gea has received regarding a transfer to Madrid, Keylor Navas has frequently been taken for granted, particularly by his club and its fans.  Navas has been superb since signing for Los Blancos, three years ago.  He’s had magical moments between the posts, just as De Gea has had, but on an even bigger stage.  That stage was the Champions League, including two finals in three seasons, no less.  The fact that he’s not a Spaniard and De Gea is, I believe is a big factor for Navas’ lack of support and just recognition for his play.  Thus, tonight will be a perfect setting for him to once again dispel the notion that Real neither need another goalkeeper (De Gea) nor want one as he goes toe to toe against his could be, would be successor.

LSB Prediction

On paper, Real Madrid is the favorite in this fixture, even without its talisman, Cristiano Ronaldo.  The sheer quality that Los Blancos possess at every level of the pitch can prove overpowering for nearly every club. This is proven by Real winning three of the past four European Cups.  But, the poor pre-season form that Madrid has recently been in, winning just a single match during its USA ICC tour, is truly a cause for concern.  Manager Zinadine Zidane even said as much to ESPNFC post the MLS All-Star Game. Zidane state, “the sensation overall is not good.  It's good that we got the result, but the sensation is not positive overall. We only won one out of four games.  The tour is done, now we have four days to go back and prepare for the [UEFA] Super Cup, which is our first official match, and obviously we have some things to work out.”  In addition, one of those four matches was against Manchester United, which finished in a 1-1 penalty kick loss.  Thus, I foresee this match being very tight with De Gea and Navas showing us their shot stopping prowess time and again.  Navas will win out on PK’s this go round.  1-1 (5-4 PK's) Real Madrid CF

REAL TO RUN RAMPANT OVER MLS ALL-STARS

MLS All-Stars vs Real Madrid CF
Soldier Field, Chicago, Illinois, United States
Wednesday, August 2nd, 2017    9:00PM ET    FS1

What an exciting week of futbol we had last week!  On Wednesday we saw the Americans reclaim the Gold Cup as they defeated the Reggae Boyz 2-1, courtesy of a late winner from the US’s striker of the future in Jordan Morris— although I guess he’s the striker of the present now, eh?.  Next, Saturday rolled in and we witnessed a double dip of the beautiful game.  AS Monaco took on Paris SG in the Trophee des Champions, following was the second El Clasico ever to be staged outside of Spain, in Miami.  Both matches certainly lived up to the billing and provided thoroughly exciting play.

PSG came from 1-0 down to win 2-1, thanks to free transfer Dani Alves.  He lit up the night in Tanger with his stunning free kick goal and assisted cross, that clinched a record tying 7th French Super Cup title for Les Parisiens.  As for El Clasico, the fireworks came early and often as Lionel Messi struck in just the third minute of play, followed by a quick fire second from Ivan Rakitc.  But Los Merengeus weren’t going to simply lay down to their eternal rivals.  As such, youngsters Mateo Kovacic and Marco Asensio drew Real level before the first half whistle.  In the end, Barcelona’s Gerrard Pique had the last word when he struck in the second half to see his side go up 3-2. La Azulgrana were able to hang on from there, retaining the title best of Spain.

Can we possibly top those matches this week, you ask?  Whelp, we’ll certainly try. This week’s featured matchup is the MLS All-Stars against Real Madrid CF.  That’s right, it’s time for the annual MLS All-Star Game!  So without further a due, let’s get you primed for tomorrow’s star studded spectacle.

MLS All-Star Game: Modern Era

The first MLS All-Star Game kicked-off at the Meadowlands in New Jersey in 1996.  Since then, the format for the annual event has changed several times: MLS East vs MLS West, MLS USA vs MLS World,  MLS All-Stars vs Team USA, MLS All-Stars vs Guadalajara (Mexican club team).  But, finally in 2005 Major League Soccer decided to pit a European club, Fulham, against the MLS All-Stars, and it drew rave reviews.

Not only was there increased viewership since Fulham was a english topflight team at the time, but America’s own league won the match 4-1.  — Granted, Fulham finished between 12th and 17th in the Premier League from the 2004-05 through 2007-08 seasons.  Thus, the Cottagers weren’t exactly considered a title contending team in England, let alone Europe.  But, the win against a British side was without question a stepping stone for the MLS.  Over the years, the competition has gotten stiffer, as has the MLS, thanks largely to the influx of retired foreign, mostly European, players, but I digress.  In totality, the MLS has won 7 and lost 5 against European foes, in the All-Star games, since that first match in 2005 against Fulham.  Some notable achievements are having beaten Chelsea, Bayern Munchen, and most recently Tottenham Hotspur.  The notable embarrassing moment for the MLS All-Stars, without a doubt, was losing to Manchester United by a combined 9-2 aggregate over the 2010 and 2011 All-Star Games.  This year MLS will be faced with its most difficult of challengers to date, Real Madrid.  The question is, will we see MLS show its quality, as it did against the Bavarians and Blues? Or will we witness a skit out of Saturday Night Live, with Los Blancos forcing the MLS All-Stars into a comedy of errors en route to another massacre, similar to that against Manchester?

Key Performers

Everybody!  This is an all-star game featuring the very best players that Major League Soccer has to offer; and it’s counterpart Real Madrid is the back-to-back Champions League Winner in Europe. The quality throughout the ranks of these two teams speaks for itself.  For the MLS All-Stars, we’ll get to see US Men’s National Team members Jozy Altidore, Michael Bradley, Dom Dwyer, Kellyn Acosta, Grahm Zusi, DeMarcus Beasley, Dax McCarty, and Tim Howard.  In addition, we’ll get to see some of Europe’s former greats now plying their trade in the States for the MLS All-Star team, with appearances by Bastian Schweinsteiger, David Villa, Sebastian Giovinco, Giovanni Do Santos, and David Villa.  On the flip side, Los Merengues will be led by Real Madrid and Span’s captain Sergio Ramos, strikers Karim Benzema and Gareth Bale, as well as midfielding dynamos Luka Modric, Tony Kroos, Isco, and Casimero.

Once these top dogs have been subbed off though, don’t expect Real to roll over.  This is still the Galacticos, therefore the under-20’s and 23’s that may get a run in the second half, are more than capable of locking down the MLS and putting one or two past ‘em, as well.  A prime example is, last year’s MLS All-Star gram.  Arsenal’s Joel Campbell (24 at the time) and Chuba Akpom (20 at the time) scored on the Gunners 2-1, over the MLS All-Stars.  Unsurprisingly, Real’s youth academy is considered much better.  So watch out for Theo, Tejero, Oscar, and Gomez to produce a moment or two of brilliance despite their tender ages.

LSB Prediction

As aforementioned, the MLS All-Stars have had several notable highlights over past 12 matches against European competition.  With that being said, Major League Soccer has never played against a team at the quality of Real Madrid.  Additionally, Los Blancos are in the midst of one of the greatest runs in the history of club futbol, particularly in the modern era of the sport.  In winning the Champions League last season over Juventus, Real became the first club to repeat win in the Champions League era, which began in the mid 1990’s.  Moreover, Los Merengues have now won three of the past four Champions Leagues, thus a dynasty is upon us.

The MLS All-Stars will simply be no match for the Ronaldo-less Galacticos.  Sergio Ramos will head a corner home.  Gareth Bale and Karim Benzema will combined for a goal.  Luka Modric will produce a wonder goal, and Theo Hernandez will have us reminiscing of last season’s Copa del Rey Final, as he will bend a free-kick into the back of the net.  Truly, I think there could be one or two more goals scored, but let’s just end it there.  Another Massacre for the MLS.

4-0 Real Madrid CF

USA TO ROUTE REGGAE BOYZ

The most anticipated match of this summer’s international break, at least for Americans anyway, is finally here!  It’s the Gold Cup Final!  Since the European club campaign ended in early June, we’ve played witness to the Euro Under-20 Championship, Confederations Cup, World cup Qualifiers, and now CONCACAF is finally center stage. The United States is set to square of. against underdog Jamaica in Santa Clara, California tomorrow night.  Thus, I’ll be giving you the lowdown on the final this week!  Plus, be sure to check out the bonus short that is sure to tickle your fancy at the end of this article!

2015 Gold Cup Semifinal Rematch

The intrigue was already at fever pitch since this is the final match of CONCACAF’s premier competition, but the fact that this game is also a rematch, of one of two 2015 Gold Cup semifinals, only adds to the anticipation.  Back in 2015, a younger and arguably more talented United States’s squad was on track to run through the Gold Cup competition. They would then have won their second consecutive title, and clinched a spot into last month’s Confederations Cup.  There was only one problem with that, nobody bothered to tell Jamaica.  Michael Bradley, Brad Guzan, Clint Dempsey and the rest of the team had one eye already onto the final against arch rival Mexico.  As a result, of the Americans underestimation of Jamaica, they were unfocused and and shell-shocked as the Reggae Boyz stunned Team USA to the tune of a 4-0 scoreline, in front of a sold out Meadowlands crowd in East Rutherford, New Jersey.  In the wake of that match, fingers were primarily being pointed at former manager Jurgen Klinsmann for allowing such a shocking result to transpire.  Many pundits and fans alike were clamoring for Klinsmann to be sacked, but he remained at the helm for a little while longer until ultimately getting canned after another dismal display against Costa Rica durning the Hex.  Meanwhile, Jamaica reached the final where it ultimately lost to El Tri on United States soil.  Will this week’s match be any different with Brucearena around be any different?

Gold Cup Pedigree vs Underdog Mentality

This final will not only be a battle of skill, speed, physicality, and tactics, but it will also be a contest amongst the wits.  The United States has played in 9 of the previous 12 Gold Cup Finals, winning 5 titles.  Therefore, the Americans will have a sense of calm and collective confidence about this match and their play— they’ve been there and done that.  Conversely, Jamaica will be participating in only its second Gold Cup Final, although it will be its second in a row.  As aforementioned, the Reggae Boyz lost to Mexico in 2015, so Jamaica has never felt the taste of victory, or smelled the fresh, crisp, cool air of the mountain top.  But what the Jamaicans do have is the toughness to exceed expectations.  The same will to win that was on display two years ago in New Jersey was the same desire and determination that saw it fend off a heavily favored El Tri team a couple of nights ago.  I fully expect that hunger, that never say die, that us against the world mentality will be ever present come Wednesday evening.

Key Performers

There will be plenty of stars out Wednesday night, and not because of all the American flags being waved in the stands of Levi Stadium.  Rather, it’ll be the exceptional play on the pitch, particularly by two men with opposing objectives. United States’s Clint Dempsey and Jamaica’s Andre Blake.  We all know Clint Dempsey.  Now the United States’ joint goalscoring king with 57 career international goals.  He accomplished this feat in 21 fewer matches and 9 less penalty kick scores than the other leader that shall not be named, making the mark even more impressive.  So it’s fair to assume and expect another dazzling display from Dempsey in the final.  The only question is, will he start or be a second half supper sub once again?  As for Andre Blake, without a shadow of doubt he’s Jamaica’s best player.  The Philadelphia Union goalkeeper single-handedly, well also “single-footly”, kept his Reggae Boyz in it against El Tri on Sunday.  He stopped 5 shots en route to a second clean sheet of the Gold Cup against Mexico. A similar performance will be required if the Jamaicans are to have any chance this go round against Team USA.

LSB Prediction

Much like two years ago, the Unite States is a huge favorite to win, with Jamaica in its accustomed role of underdog.  The Reggae Boyz jumped up, bit, and bullied the Americans last time out; but this year, in this match, things will be different.  The sweet smell of revenge and the tantalizing taste of Gold Cup victory will have Clint Dempsey and the Americans wounding the Jamaicans early with a quick fire double. Dempsey will then seal the deal in the second half!
3-0 United States

El Classico Bonus Short

Real Madrid CF vs FC Barcelona
Hard Rock Stadium, Miami Gardens, Florida, USA
Saturday, July 29th, 2017  7:30PM ET  ESPN

It’s must see television whenever Real Madrid and Barcelona square off.  Typically, the two iconic clubs meet in their respective home cities in Spain, and the result of said match is for much higher stakes. Stakes such as La Liga, Copa del Rey, the Spanish Supercopa, etc.  But this time, Los Merengeus face La Blaugrana in Miami, Florida, for the International Champions Cup!  Thus, whilst this fixture will still supply us with the best collection of talent currently assembled on one pitch, the game itself is still just a friendly.  Thus, expect plenty of substitutions throughout the match.  With that said, the intensity and physicality will certainly be present with whoever steps foot between the lines.  Because in the end, it’s still Real Madrid versus Barcelona and neither side ever wants to lose to its eternal rival.

LSB Prediction:  With South Beach, as its backdrop, this El Classico is expected to have a Super Bowlesque feel to it come matchday.  With an electric crowd featuring celebrities galore, the atmosphere should be top-notch.  The on-field performance will produce fireworks, as well.  The MSN of Messi, Suarez, and Neymar will be a handful and more for Sergio Ramos’s men.  And in perhaps Neymar’s swan song, he scores the winner for La Azulgrana! 3-2 FC Barcelona

AS Roma vs Paris Saint-Germain FC
Comerica Park, Detroit, Michigan
July 19th, 2017    7:00PM ET    ESPN

With national team play coming to a close next week with the Gold Cup Final, it’s time to begin turning our attention to the upcoming European club season!  That’s right, preseason camp has begun for world renowned clubs, Real Madrid, Barcelona, Juventus, etc.  And this means the annual International Champions Cup is right around the corner.  The aforementioned “Super Clubs”, as well as other big boys such as Manchester United, City, Tottenham Hotspur, As Roma, and Paris SG will all be plying its trade here in the States to prepare for the club season set to kickoff in mid-August.  Therefore, what better way to celebrate the start of the new campaign than to talk about this exciting preseason tournament taking place on our soil!  Today, I’ll be highlighting the first match of the ICC featuring AS Roma and PSG, which is taking place in my own backyard, Detroit, Michigan!

Host: Comerica Park

This will be the first futbol match to be played on the coveted carpet of Comerica Park.  The ballpark, which is located in Detroit’s reinvigorated and vibrant downtown, has been home for the Detroit Tigers since 2000.  During the Copa’s 17 year history, it’s played venue to multiple World Series, AL Pennant triumphs, and historic moments, such as Magglio Ordonez’s walk-off winner against the A’s, sending the Tigers into the World Series for the first time since the club won it all in 1984 (I was in attendance for the spectacle), Or, Justin Verlander’s first career no-hitter, Miggy magic, legendary Tiger’s former broadcaster Ernie Harwell’s timeless calls and his eye watering send-off speech that still gives me chills as I write this, epic concerts, and much more.  And as AS Roma and PSG take to the pitch tomorrow, another memorable chapter will be written inside these teenage, but still historic, walls of Comerica Park.

Key Performers

This match is an exhibition, therefore we won’t only see stars, such as Edinson Cavani, Thiago Silva, Blaise Matuidi, Marco Verratti, Angel Di Maria, Julian Draxler, Daniele De Rossi, and Edin Dzeko, but we will so see plenty of the young up and comers from the respective club’s youth academy.  A player of particular interest is 17 year old Timothy Weah.  Weah, the son of former Ballon d”Or winner and PSG player, George Weah.  Timothy recently signed his first senior level squad contact and will undoubtedly be given time to compete Tuesday night.  What makes Timothy’s background even more intriguing is that he’s a United States youth national.  Thus, we’ll get a glimpse into the bright future of the US Men’s National Team through this under-18 player.

Other youngsters and coming of age talents to keep an eye on throughout the match is Stephan El Shaarawy, Alisson, Goncalo Guedes, Presnel Kimpembe, and Alphonse Areola.  El Shaarawy has played top flight futbol since he broke into Genoa’s senior ranks when he was at the tender age of 16.  Thus, expectations were sky-high for the Italian, and as such he’s consistently progressed.  However, now at the age of 24, it’s time to see Stephan’s game take another big step forward as the sale of Muhammed Salah should leave El Shaarawy as the new featured winger in Roma’s attack.  As for Alisson, the Brazil #1, will now be given full reign of Roma’s net as Wojciech Szczesny has moved back from loan to Arsenal.  Meanwhile for Les Parisians, Guedes and Kimpembe should continue to grow as depth squad players for the upcoming campaign.  Lastly, Areola will be eyeing a starting role in goal.  Last year was something of a horror show for PSG goalkeepers, particularly for Kevin Trapp in the second leg of the Champions League Quarterfinal against Barcelona when he and his squad let in 6 goals.  Thus, Areola will be given a legitimate shot at the starting job.

Prediction

Remember that this is an exhibition, thus there’s always the unknown.  This is thanks to the expanded rosters being filled by youth academy talent. They will be getting minutes in the match, while, senior squad members work themselves back into top shape. Thus the team will not always be performing at full throttle.  With that said, on paper Roma has the advantage between the sticks, but Paris Saint-Germain edges the Italians out in defense, midfield, and in front of goal.  Therefore, Weah will lead the way with a game winning goal for Les Bleus!  3-2 Paris Saint-Germain

SILLY SEASON SHORTS: SUMMER TRANSFER WINDOW PART 2

Silly Season Shorts: Summer Transfer Window Part 2

We are now in the second week of July, and that means that the summer transfer season is well underway.  Clubs all across Europe have been making moves, adding or subtracting players, in an attempt to bolster their squad for the present, future or in some cases both.  A few weeks ago I highlighted three high profile players that had been discussed in possible moves to greener pastures.  In the cases of Cristiano Ronaldo and Antoine Griezmann, they’re staying put.  However, the ongoing threesome saga involving Marco Verratti, PSG, and Barcelona has been an entertaining follow, but no one can truly predict the result, at this point.  With that said, there are indeed plenty of transfers that have been made official, with the cream of the crop taking place in the UK.  Thus, this week I’ll be providing a list of intriguing, marquee, and eye raising transfers that are in the books.

Alexandre Lacazette:  The French striker, who was nearly headed to Atletico before Greizmann decided to stay in Madrid, has made a big money move to Arsenal from Lyon.  The Gunners paid £52 million for the 26 year old, which is a club transfer fee record.  The move has produced mixed reviews from pundits, but I believe he has the size, speed, and technical ability to thrive at Arsenal and endure the riggers of the English game, competition, and scheduling.  Results might not come to fruition until year two, as it’s become almost routine that players need a season to adjust and adapt to the Prem League, but he will.

Romelu Lukaku:  The big bodied, powerful Belgian center forward is set to don the red, white, and black of Manchester United as the Red Devils and Everton have agreed to a £75 million transfer.  Lukaku, at just 23, has already become of one the Premier League’s most lethal scoring weapons.  He netted 68 times for the Toffees since the 2013-14 season, including 20 goals last campaign.  Also, the Belgian international became the first foreign player in Premier League history to reach the 80 goal mark before the turn of age 24 this past year.  Thus, Man United have themselves a proven product, and one that will be scoring goals at Old Trafford for a decade to come!

Victor Lindelof:  Since we’re on the topic of Manchester United, the Red Devils also completed a £40 million transfer for center back Victor Lindelof.  The 22 year old Swedish international made a name for himself whilst breaking into Portuguese club Benefica.  He’s expected to accompany last summer’s signee, Eric Bailly, in the back. This leaves assistant captain, Chris Smalling’s, future and role at the club up in the air.

Ederson:  Moving cross town to the Etihad, Pep Guardiola aimed to solidify the always important goalkeeping position. The Barca legend thought he accomplished this objective last summer by plucking Claudio Bravo from Barcelona, but soon he and everyone else witnessed the Chilean’s quick decline in form.  Thus, enter Ederson.  Just like Lindelof, the 23 year old Brazilian began to blossom while performing inside the Stadio da Luz.  Yup, another Benfica product, and another huge transfer fee.  £35million fee to be exact, which now makes Ederson the most expensive goalkeeper in pound sterling history.  High expectations for the young man between the sticks, but if he lives up to the billing, then Man City will have themselves an elite ‘keeper for another 10-15 years.  That would be money well spent.

Bernardo Silva: The last fresh face I’ll be mentioning from Manchester is attacking midfielder Bernardo Silva.  The Portugal international dictated and delighted for Monaco as he helped guide Les Rouges et Blancs to a surprising Ligue 1 title.  Much like the prior three players, the 22 year old, from Lisbon, burst onto the senior club scene with Portuguese powerhouse Benfica before dazzling in the backdrop of beautiful Monte Carlo.  Guardiola couldn’t pass this mercurial talent up, thus he ponied up £61 million, including performance related add-ons for Silva.  It’s clear that there is a youth movement taking place under Pep as the likes of Ederson, latest signees Gabriel Jesus and Leroy Sane, and now Bernardo Silva have been brought in.  However, I’m not sure exactly how much game time Bernardo will get this campaign with the likes of Kevin De Bruyne and David Silva ahead of him in the pecking order.  Plus, while on the pitch, I wonder just how effective he’ll be. I believe Bernardo will need time to adapt to the riggers of England’s top flight and top four futbol.  Therefore, I view this signing as a focus on depth for the now and starter down the road.

Wayne Rooney:  England and Red Devil legend Wayne Rooney leaving Man U for free. Rooney is heading back to his childhood club Everton.  Rooney, the man that holds goalscoring records for the England National Team, as well as for Manchester United, has seen his skills and playing time diminish over the past couple of seasons.  Thus, by last season’s end, Rooney was not only routinely left out of the starting eleven, he regularly did not play. He was not even selected to sub on by “The Special One,” Jose Mourinho.  To me, Rooney’s treatment by Mourinho was excessive, just as it was towards German great, Bastian Schweinstiger, earlier on in the season.  It was either riding the pine again, or simply moving on to another club for Rooney, and moving on it will be, to Everton.  Sure, he’s not the player he once was but Wayne still has quality, technical ability, and most of all and abundance knowledge and leadership that can and will contribute to this Everton squad.  The fact he’s coming full circle by moving back to Goodison Park just makes it all the sweeter.

2017 CONCACAF GOLD CUP: GROUP STAGE PREVIEW

The summer soccer season presses on as the Confederations Cup concludes and the Gold Cup commences.  Last week, we experienced another example of Germany’s dominance and depth of quality as its “B-Team” beat the likes of Mexico, Portugal, and Chile en route to winning its nations’ first Confederations Cup.  I say “B-Team”, because Die Mannschaft included eight eligible under 21 players in its squad, leaving out star names such as Mesut Ozil, Tony Kroos, Thomas, Muller, Manuel Nuer, Jerome Boetang, Mats Hummels, and more.  Meanwhile, the aforementioned contending foes were all supplied with their “A-Squad”, thus making the achievement even more impressive.  And while Germany’s youth movement seemed surprising, B-Teams are trending across the globe this summer as the United States and Mexico will be fielding “B-Teams” of their own for this rendition of the Gold Cup.

Gold Cup History

When the first ball is kicked at Red Bull Arena on Friday, July 7th, it’ll mark the start of the 14th Gold Cup.  The Gold Cup is CONCACAF’s (Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football) major tournament pitting the confederations’ best national teams against each other, similar to that of UEFA’s European Championship, CONMEBOL’s Copa America, etc.  However, unlike in Europe and South America which hold its major tournament every four years and rotates the host country, the Gold Cup is played every two years in the United States.  The champion of the competition is dubbed the best futbol squad in the region and qualifies for a spot in the one game playoff to enter into the 2021 FIFA Confederations Cup— if there is one.  Now, if the same nation wins both Gold Cups during this four year cycle, then said squad with forgo the one game playoff and gain immediate access to the Confederations Cup.  During the past four year cycle, the United States won the first Gold Cup, with rivals Mexico claiming the second. As such, there was a tiebreaker match.  El Tri beat the Americans, and went to Russia for last month’s Confederations Cup.  Thus, this tournament is incredibly important, as it’s the region’s premier competition and provides the lone avenue to reaching the Confederations Cup.  Historically, Mexico and the United States have had a stronghold on the trophy, as the two nations have combined to win 12 of the 13 Gold Cups (Mexico 7, United States 5, and Canada 1).

Group Stage Predictions

Group A

Group A includes two nations participating in the Hexagonal (Final Round of CONCACAF World Cup Qualifying) in Costa Rica and Honduras.  These two favorites are joined by Canada and new entrant French Guiana.  Without a doubt Les Yana Dokos are simply overjoyed with qualifying for the Gold Cup.  No matter the results, which are likely three losses, French Guiana can be proud of reaching this stage for the first time in its history.  Meanwhile, Canada will aim to pull out a result against Honduras and hope for advancement on goal difference, which is also unlikely.  Costa Rica, however, should win the group with ease as it’s led by standout Gunner Joel Campbell.  Surprisingly though, Galactico goalkeeper Keylor Navas has been left off the Ticos squad.

  1. Costa Rica    2.   Honduras        3.   Canada        4.   French Guiana

Group B

Group B will be led by host nation and heavy favorite the United States.  Despite omitting key contributors in legend Clint Dempsey, attacking maestro Christian Pulisic, captain Michael Bradley, and strikers Bobby Wood and Jozy Altidore, the Americans should still have plenty of gumption in its play to win the group and press on towards the final.  Watch out for young Chelsea centerback, Mike Miazga, striker, Jordan Morris, and national team newcomer, Domic Dwyer, as this trio could provide a glimpse into the USMNT’s future.  As for the rest, fellow Hexagonal foe Panama should perform well enough to finish second and advance to the knockouts ahead of Nicaragua and Martinique.

  1. United States    2.   Panama        3.   Nicaragua        4.   Martinique

Group C

The third and final group includes Mexico, Jamaica, El Salvador, and Curacao.  El Salvador and Curacao will likely be battling it out for third and fourth place, meanwhile Jamaica and Mexico will undoubtedly finish in the top two.  But in which order?  Now, if El Tri was running out its “A-Squad”, I’d for sure fancy the Mexicans to win the group.  However, since El Tri just finished playing in the Confederations Cup, it’s a “B-Team” that’ll be taking the pitch for the Gold Cup.  For this reason, I have a sneaky suspicion that Jamaica, a team that stunned USA in the last Gold Cup, will steal Group C from El Tri.

  1. Jamaica        2.   Mexico        3.   El Salvador    4.   Curacao

So there you have it, the Gold Cup Group Stage Primer.  Next week, come back to check out the latest European transfer news on July 11th and be sure to tune in July 25th as I’ll be previewing the Gold Cup Final taking place Wednesday July 26th.  But until then, I hope you all enjoy the fun, festive, and fierce futbol.

FIFA CONFEDERATIONS CUP RUSSIA 2017 PREVIEW: KNOCKOUT STAGE SHORTS

Welcome back to the Lewnau Sports Bureau!  So far the Confederations Cup has followed my script as Portugal, Mexico, Germany, and Chile all advanced to the knockout rounds.  Cristiano Ronaldo has dazzled through Portugal’s group, stage scoring twice and assisting on another occasion.  Germany’s young bloods have played their typical technically sound style of football.  Chile has been industrious in their work.  Mexico has produced enthusiastic and acrobatic goals.  And Russia, is now just a spectator after failing to beat El Tri in game three.  So much for Russia winning the Cup on its home soil eh Putin?  Anyway, the stage is set for what should be two terrific semifinal matches midweek, and a dandy of a third place and final game come Sunday.  Therefore, let’s get you ready for the fantastic futbol ahead.

Semifinals

Portugal vs Chile
Kazan Arena, Kazan, Russia
Wednesday, June 28th    2:00PM EST    FS1

On tap first is Portugal vs Chile!  The reigning champions from the globe’s two most demanding footballing contents, Portugal (Europe) and Chile (South America), are poised to put on a show for us fans.  There will be plenty of high scoring players taking the pitch as Ronaldo, Andre Silva, and Bernardo Silva highlight Portugal’s trident of tricks.  Meanwhile, Chile will be led by Gunner Alexis Sanchez and Bayern bruiser Arturo Vidal.  Speaking of bruising, I’m rather interested in seeing how the Seleccao squad, Ronaldo included, will handle Chile’s physical style of play.  After watching the past two Copa Americas and seeing Leo Messi get pulled, battered and bruised against La Roja in 2015 and 2016, ultimately holding Argentina scoreless in both finals (I know, know, if it wasn’t for Higuain’s blown chances— Damn Higuain), I simply can’t wait to see Ronaldo and company handle the physical pressure put upon them.  This without a doubt is the key to the game.

LSB Prediction:  While Portugal is UEFA’s current champs, they slithered by time and again during the Euro’s routinely winning either on penalties or in extra time.  Combine the Seleccao’s thin margin for error with Chile’s fierce play and it’s a recipe that not even Ronaldo can muster.  1-0 Chile

Germany vs Mexico
Fisht Stadium, Sochi, Russia
Thursday, June 29th    2:00PM EST    FS1

The second semifinal brings us a familiar scene, as the German national team is once again in a semifinals match. As defending World Cup champions, Germany is unquestionably the favorite in this match against North America’s best in El Tri.  Mexico must convert their chances when given the opportunity, we’re looking at you Chicharito, because they’ll be few and far between.  Plus, with Draxler and Werner in fine fettled form, the Mexican backline must communicate, track back, and keep a compact shape or things could get ugly.

LSB Prediction: The Germans will have a field day against the men from Mexico.  Running rampant will be Julian Draxler, Leon Goretzka, and Joshua Kimmich, as they feed young buck Timo Werner en route to victory. 4-1 Germany

Third Place Playoff

Portugal vs Mexico
Spartak Stadium, Moscow, Russia
Sunday, July 2rd    8:00AM EST    FS1

Come Sunday fans will have a double dose of footballing fun.  First up is the early bird special pitting semifinal losers against each other in a battle for the bronze medal.  As I see it it, the fixture will be a rematch from the group stage between Portugal and Mexico.  The first meeting ended in a 2-2 draw, however Mexico was the deserved winners, despite needing a late equalizer.  El Tri dominated possession, but Ronaldo, on a well timed run, played provider in making Mexico pay for the opening goal.  Then in the second half, Portugal was the beneficiary of a deflected Cedric Soares shot. The ball veered on goal and past Ochoa for the second.  Outside of those two instances, the Seleccao did virtually nothing offensively.  Meanwhile, Mexico had chance after chance. They converted two, but left many more opportunities begging.

This go round Portugal needs to play a more inspired attacking game, which the Seleccao should be able to do with the likes of Cristiano and company.  As for El Tri, Chicharito must convert his chances with regularity, like a starting striker should. He will also need to capitalize on set pieces, as they did in game the first match.

LSB Prediction: Ronaldo will still be fuming after his squad’s midweek meltdown against Chile.  Thus, I fully expect a spirited performance from him and his Seleccao.  Ultimately Ronny will bag a hat trick and Chicharito will be left scratching his head wondering how on earth his six yard shot is still sailing into the sky.  3-2 Portugal

Final

Germany vs Chile
Saint Petersburg Stadium, Saint Petersburg, Russia
Sunday, July 2nd    2:00PM EST    FOX

Sunday’s main event, the Confederations Cup Final, will provide World Cup winners Germany against CONMEBOL champions Chile!  This will be another exciting affair between two squads featuring differing styles of play.  The Germans will pose problems for La Roja with their technical superiority.  Meanwhile, Chile’s ruggedness will aim to alter Die Mannschaft’s passing prowess and link up play.  In addition, Chile will have the edge in experience as La Roja will feature a veteran laden team.  Conversely, Joachim Lowe chose to bring a bushel basket of fresh meat to the tournament, as the vast majority of the German squad members are participating in their first major international competition.

LSB Prediction: Despite Die Mannschaft’s tender age, this squad possesses top notch talent, and the Confederations Cup will serve as a coming out party for the next great generation of German futbol win or lose.  But the word “lose” is not in DFB’s vocabulary, thus Draxler will dazzle and Ter Stegen will stonewall Sanchez in Saint Petersburg! 1-0 Germany

SILLY SEASON SHORTS: SUMMER TRANSFER WINDOW 2017 PART 1

Summer is upon us, as the first official day of the season is tomorrow June, 21st, and it’s “Silly Season” for European club football.  This is the time of year when the player transfer market is open, and irrational and unfounded claims of player movement are being written in the papers across the European continent.  Sure, there will be several high profile footballers who will make a big money move to another club, but the majority, who’ll be talked about at nauseam, will in fact stay put.  Thus, I’ll be providing you with a two part summer short focusing on the transfer window that leads up and into the start of the 2017-18 European season.  This week I’ll be highlighting key figures involving La Liga’s big 3! Here we go!

Cristiano Ronaldo

Just two weeks ago, Cristiano Ronaldo was leading his Los Blancos side to the pinnacle of European supremacy for the third time in four years as Real Madrid thrashed Juventus 4-1 in the Champions League Final.  It seemed in that moment that Ronaldo was on his way to capturing a record tying fifth Ballon d’Or, which he still is, and further cementing his status as Real’s main striker for several more seasons to come despite his ripe footballing age of 32.  But my oh my how two weeks can change the landscape of things.

Shortly after Cristiano claimed the Champions League Golden Boot and Champions Winners’ Medal, he was accused of tax evasion by the Spanish government.  According to them, CR7 failed to claim taxes on $16.5 million between 2011-14.  Thus, a trial is likely ahead for the all-time great and if found guilty, he may indeed see jail time.  In light of this news, Real Madrid simply sat silent as opposed to coming out in full unwavering support of their superstar.  This pin drop quite is supposedly one of the key reasons for Ronaldo stating that his time is up in Madrid, as he’s reportedly asked to leave the club and seek a transfer out of Spain.

Therefore, if Zidane, Sergio Ramos, and the rest of the Real Madrid camp can’t convince the mercurial striker to stay in the Spanish capital then there are two serious contenders for the Portugal captain’s services.  First and most likely is Manchester United.  The Red Devils are currently void of a world class forward as Zlatan Ibrahimovic was a one and done player after picking up a knee injury at the tail end of last season and captain Wayne Rooney is far past his prime and nearly two feet out the door himself.  Couple that with the fact that Ronaldo used to don the famed red, white, and black kit before plying his trade in Spain, and you have yourself a credible suitor and a homecoming storyline.  Plus, Man U possess the biggest sweetener to a deal that Real’s taste buds fancy in Spanish #1 David De Gea.

The other club in contention of landing Ronaldo is Paris Saint Germain.  The French club, owned by Qatar Sports Investments, has loads of money to spend.  Thus, expect Les Bleus to offer something close to Madrid’s €200 million asking price for Cristiano, as well as a possible pay raise for the player, who already earns around €30 million per season.

Antoine Griezmann

Moving crosstown in the Spanish Capital, Atletico Madrid’s maestro, Antoine Griezmann, has announced he’s staying put.  For nearly a year, the French striker was linked with a big money move to Manchester United.  However, since Atletico’s transfer ban appeal was upheld not to long ago, I had a feeling that Griezmann would stay another year.  Add on the fact that manager Diego Simeone asked him to stay and help open up Rojiblancos’s new stadium, Wanda Metropolitano, this upcoming season and the decision to stay was inevitable.  Griezmann penned an extension to 2021 with Atletico, but don’t count on him staying until then.  A move to England is forthcoming for Antoine, just not this year.

Marco Verratti

Heading towards the banks of the Mediterranean Sea, Barcelona’s #1 summer target is without a doubt the dynamic midfielder Marco Verratti.  The young Italian national and PSG player has been dubbed the next great midfielder to roam the middle of Camp Nou’s pitch.  La Blaugrana were particularly weak in that department this past campaign, as the midfield has been void of Xavi Hernandez for a couple years now.  In addition,  Andres Inietsa has begun aging rather quickly, Ivan Rakitic suffered a subpar season by his standards, Sergio Busquets appeared a step slow, and the Andre Gomes experiment was a complete dumpster fire.  Thus, adding Verratti is essential for Barca bossing the center of the park again, as well as providing link up play to MSN.  There’s a snag however.

Paris SG doesn’t want to let Marco go.  Verratti has reportedly told France’s capital club that he wants out.  That’s not stopping the Qatari ownership from resisting though, as Verratti is PSG’s best player now and for arguably for the next decade.  Thus it’ll be interesting to see who wins out here.  I have a feeling that the combination of Marco Verratti demanding to be let go and club powerhouse FC Barcelona flexing their bank muscle, will lead to Marco joining Barca come the start of the La Liga campaign. Perhaps, he will even be a Barca player in time for the El Clasico’s Spanish Supercopa.

Part 2 Preview

Part 2 is set to be released next month, July 11th!  Then, I’ll provide updates on Ronaldo and Verratti, if necessary, as well as touch upon noteworthy transfers that have been signed, sealed, and delivered.  In the mean time, be sure to tune in next Tuesday, as I prime you for the Confederations Cup Knockout Stage!  Have great week!

FIFA CONFEDERATIONS CUP RUSSIA 2017 PREVIEW

So, you were sulking in the fact that this year’s European club soccer season has come to an end, weren’t you.  Well, have no fear for the national scene is here.  World Cup qualifiers have been in progress for a week now across the globe, but beginning this Saturday, the games will be played for trophies.  On tap first is the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup being staged in Russia, with the 2017 CONCACAF Gold Cup taking place in the United States in July (the Gold Cup Preview is July 4th).  This, article will pump you up with excitement, and prime you for the matches to come in the FIFA Confederations Cup.

FIFA Confederations Cup

First introduced in Saudi Arabia, in 1992, as the King Fahd Cup, now called the FIFA Confederations Cup, is now played every four years, consisting of eight teams from across the globe.  Six of the contestants are recent champions from each countries respected confederation.  One contestant is the reigning World Cup champion, with the remaining participant being the host nation.  For this year’s iteration, Germany (UEFA) represents the World Cup slot as the Germans are the reigning Champions from World Cup 2014 in Brazil.  Meanwhile Portugal (UEFA), Chile (COMEBOL), Mexico (CONCACAF), Cameroon (CAF), Australia (AFC), and New Zealand (OFC) occupy the confederation spots.  The final slot will be taken by Russia (UEFA), host of the competition.

The tournament features two groups of four nations, with the top two finishers in each bracket advancing to the semifinals.  Once in the knockout rounds, the semifinals and final are one off matches, winner take all.  Lastly, this competition not only provides us with some of the world’s best squads, but will be a sort of a test run for host Russia, as they continue to prepare for next year’s World Cup.  Thus, all eyes will be on a country that has its fair share of “hooligans,” who will be sure to try to put their stamp on proceedings.

During EURO 2016 Russian “hooligans” descended upon France and started riots in city streets, fights in the stands, and shot flares onto the pitch, endangering the players and surrounding supporters.  The actions of these men reached such a point that UEFA threatened to disqualify the Russian national team from the EURO’s if the incidents continued to occur.

In addition to the physical outbursts towards opposing teams, less than a year before the 2014 Winter Olympics were held in Russia, an anti-gay law was unanimously approved by the Russian government. The Russian fans and government have made clear the exclusionary beliefs. It will be with weighted shoulders that many countries enter the 2018 World Cup, as they believe in the principals behind UEFA’s No to Racism mantra, which is represented each game on the captains armband.  Due to all of this, the actions of the Russian hosts will be magnified. Hopefully, we will all be pleasantly surprised with a gracious, inclusive, open armed host to all players and countries.

Group Stage Predictions

Group A

Group A features host Russia, Portugal, Mexico, and New Zealand.  The Kiwis, which have appeared on three other occasions, will simply be happy to participate in the tournament’s festivities as New Zealand will lose all three matches, likely by a considerable amount.  Russia however is and intriguing group member.  They pale in comparison to Portugal and Mexico as a team, but with playing every match behind a home crowd, the Russians just might sneak past Mexico into the second spot.  Mexico, meanwhile is favored to finish second, as national team record goalscorer, Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez leads El Tri’s line.  As for Portugal, they have a four time, soon to be five time, Ballon d’Or winner Cristiano Ronaldo on the squad.  Enough said.

1. Portugal    2. Mexico    3. Russia    4. New Zealand

Group B

Group B includes defending World Cup winners Germany, Chile, Australia, and Cameroon.  Die Mannschaft is a lock to win the group, despite the rather youthful squad that’s being sent.  Instead of Manuel Neuer, it’ll be Marc Andre Ter-Stegen between the sticks.  No Mesut Ozil or Thomas Muller, no problem, Julian Draxler and Timo Werner will slice and score.  The list really does goes on and on, Germany is that loaded.  Meanwhile,  Australia and Cameroon will battle things out for third and fourth place, as their overall quality simply doesn’t compare to South America’s back-to-back Copa winners in Chile.  Led by Arsenal forward, Alexis Sanchez, and a physical philosophy, Chile should advance with ease.

1. Germany    2. Chile    3. Cameroon    4. Australia

So there you have it.  The group stage is set and my predictions have been made.  Now let’s sit back, sip a cervesa, and enjoy the beautiful game.  Be sure to tune in next week as I focus on the summer transfer market, as well as for June 27th’s article as I preview the Confederation Cup semifinals and final.  Salud!

SWEEPING STORIES OF THE 2016-17 SEASON

SWEEPING STORIES OF THE 2016-17 SEASON

The 2016-17 European club season is officially in the books!  The season culminated with a Champions League Final clash that was supposed to provide edge of your seat entertainment through the full 90 minutes, instead, ended with a jaw-dropping runaway performance by the All Whites, wearing purple.  But that was just the last of many storylines that had ultimately shaped this season.  Therefore, this week, including Real’s win over Juve, I’ll be reflecting on several headlines, that swept the continent this past year.

Ronaldo Leads Real To Record 12th Title

There was only one place to start, and that’s with the Kings of Europe, Real Madrid.  As aforementioned, Los Blancos beat Juventus 4-1 in Wales this past weekend.  Led by none other than Cristiano Ronaldo, Real Madrid hoisted the famed “bunny ears” for a record 12th time in club history.  In addition, the triumph meant that the Galacticos have won back-to-back European titles.  A feat that hasn’t been accomplished by any club since the advent of the Champions League current format, which was installed over 20 years ago.  Lastly, Ronaldo netted twice in the match, with the second being his 600th career goal for club and country.  Simply incredible!

Magisterial Messi Not Enough For Barca

Lionel Messi was sublime all season long for Barcelona.  He scored a remarkable 54 goals, while still providing 16 assists to his teammates in all club competitions.  However, in the end, his efforts were mostly wasted as La Blaugrana raised only the Spanish Supercopa and Copa del Rey trophies this year.  The club failed to retain La Liga as Barca’s eternal rivals Real Madrid finished three points ahead in the final standings.  Albeit, Barcelona did have the edge in head-to-head matches against Los Blancos, winning one and drawing the other.  On the European front, Messi’s men were magical in the historic comeback to PSG in the Round of 16.  With that said, Barca didn’t have the gumption to deal with Juve’s suffocating defense.  As a result, La Azulgrana were bounced from the Champions League in the Quarterfinals for a second consecutive season.  Ultimately, Messi’s Gold Shoe winning and Ballon d’Or caliber campaign will likely be undervalued due to his club’s deficiencies, leading to Ronaldo taking the prize for world’s best once again.

Arsene Stupefies Once Again For Arsenal

There were several high profile stories that came out of England, as usual.  The most engrossing, by far, was the Arsene Wenger shirr-aid.  From matchday 1 of the Premier League campaign through the hoisting of the FA Cup at season’s end, the number one question was, “is Wenger going to leave or stay after this season?”  And as the year progressed, with Arsenal underachieving once again, more and more of the fanbase were turning on Arsene and the club.  Every week, there was a banner flying through the sky over the stadium with a common theme “Arsene Must Go”.  For a moment, after the Gunners were embarrassed 10-2 on aggregate to Bayern Munich in the Round of 16 of the Champions League, pundits around the world, fans in London, and even minority board members wanted and wished that Arsene would be fired or simply retire at season’s end.  But through all the disappointments, Arsenal actually played to its potential against Chelsea in the FA Cup Final and walked off champions for a record 13th time.  And apparently that was enough for majority owner Stan Kroenke to offer Wenger a new two year contract, which Arsene eloquently obliged.  Next season, it’s European Championship aspirations for the Europa League!

Man United’s Underwhelming Success

At season’s start, Manchester was expected to be a hotbed for the Premier League title chase.  Instead, both Pep Guardiola’s Man City and Jose Mourinho’s Man United fell far and fast out of contention.  The Red Devils were supposed to be flashy as world record transfer Paul Pogba, star striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic, and attacking savvy Henrik Mkhitaryan were all brought in during the summer transfer window.  However, United struggled to win games.  The club routinely drew league matches (15), and scraped by in regulation or in extra time during the cup competitions.  Still, by year’s end, Man United had won a treble of trophies, the FA Community Shield, EFL Cup, and Europa League.

Conte’s Quick Chelsea Turnaround

Two season’s ago Chelsea had won the Premier League under the tutelage of “The Special One”, Jose Mourinho.  Shortly after that, Chelsea owner Roman Abromovich gave Mourinho a contract extension as he and so many pundits saw a team that looked primed to win for years to come in England and across Europe.  But, in the ensuing season, Mourinho’s voice was being tuned out by many of the stars, including Eden Hazarad and Diego Costa.  Couple the players attitude with a rude awakening that defensive anchors Branislov Ivanovic and John Terry were all of a sudden well past their prime, and Chelsea fell to a 10th placed finish in the league. All of this led to the “The Special One” being canned during the campaign.  Thus, new manager, Conte had some work to do to turn the sad state of the club around, and boy did he.  Conte brought in defensive stalwart David Luiz to be the new anchor of his back three formation and it worked brilliantly, as Chelsea was producing clean sheets once again.  In addition, Conte’s infectious attitude rubbed off onto his players.  Eden Hazard was once again playing like a player of the year candidate.  Pedro Rodriguez, a man that scored 99 goals for La Blaugrana, was performing in a manor that reminded us all of why he was bought from Barcelona.  Conte steered Chelsea back up the table and to the top of the Premier League, winning the title with multiple games in hand.

Emery’s Extinguishable First Season In Paris

Paris SG brought in Unai Emery to do one thing that his predecessor Lauren Blanc couldn’t do for the club, win the Champions League.  The reason why Emery had this lone objective, was because under Blanc, Paris had won four consecutive Ligue 1 titles, and back-to-back domestic trebles.  Thus, winning all three domestic competitions for Les Parisians this term and for the foreseeable future were considered a given.  Heck, PSG won Ligue 1 by an astonishing 30 points the year before.  But Emery’s first year in charge at the Parc des Princes went up in flames!  His side was not only bounced out of the Champions League. losing to Barcelona in a historic 6-1 defeat at the Camp Nou, failing in his lone object, but PSG also failed to win Ligue 1.  They finished in second behind a talented-but incredibly youthful and inexperienced Monaco.  Yes, Emry indeed managed Paris to the Coupe de la Ligue and Coupe de France titles, but simply put, this season was a complete dumpster fire.

Swan Song Seasons For All-Time Greats

Shifting gears, I must make mention of a few of football’s all-time greats that have decided to hang up the cleats permanently, from the club that has made them who they are, or in Europe in general.  In Bavaria, Bayern Munchen captain, Phillip Lahm, and midfielder, Xabi Alonso, played their final match this past May.  They left in rousing style, drinking beer and splashing one another with it, in celebration of another Bundesliga triumph.  In London, John Terry received a nice, although self-choreographed, send-off in Chelsea’s final game of the season.  Terry was subbed in the 26th minute, the same number as his jersey, and walked off the pitch between a lineup of clapping teammates.  Meanwhile in Manchester,  Zlatan Ibrahimovic may or may not have played his last match in Europe, after sustaining a serious knee injury in the latter stages of the season.  If, indeed, it is his final match in Europe, he surely had a great one year run with the Red Devils.  He lead the team in goals and fired home two in the EFL Cup win.  Also, at Old Trafford, Wayne Rooney appears as though he’s played his last match for United.  Becoming the all-time goalscorer for the club, the Red Devil captain rode the pine for much of this season, but when people look back at his career, they’ll remember his physically imposing stature, goalscoring prowess, and team leading quality that helped United win a bevy of trophies during his time with the club.  Lastly, I can’t leave out Frascesco Totti for Roma.  At 40 years of age, the Rome native was a one man club.  Debuting with Roma in 1992, Totti has played in 619 club matches scoring 250 goals.  What exceptional talents these footballers were.  I thank them for their service to the game, the clubs, and us fans.

Under-20’s Take Europe By Storm

From end of one’s career to the beginning for an other.  This season has given birth to several stardom destined youngsters.  Most notably Kylian Mbappe of Monaco.  The 18 year French forward hit the senior club scene in stride.  Once in the starting Xl, Mbappe was scoring goals at will, whether it be in Ligue 1 or the Champions League.  He even snuck one by Buffon, one of the goalkeeping greats and 21 years his elder.  Ultimately, the torrid form the teenager is in has led to £100 million bids from Real Madrid, Man City, Arsenal, etc. for his career long services.  Another youngster that delighted this season was teenager Marcus Rashford.  In his first full season for Man United, the 19 year striker produced some stunning moments.  For example his burst past the daunted Chelsea back line in route to a lovely finish.  There was also, his wondrous free kick to beat Celta Vigo in the first leg of the Europa League semifinals.  Another teenage sensation that swept us off our feet was Ajax center forward, Kasper Dolberg.  Also 19, Dolberg helped guide a historically young Ajax squad to the Europa League Finals.  He netted in both the home and away legs of the semi’s against Lyon, before ultimately being marked out of the match against a veteran Man United.  But the future is in fact blinding bright for Dolberg, as he’s caught the eye of Liverpool’s Jurgen Klopp, a move to Anfield is perhaps destined in a year’s time.

UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE FINAL 2017

Juventus FC vs Real Madrid C.F.
Millennium Stadium, Cardiff, Wales, United Kingdom
Saturday, June 3rd    2:45PM EST    FOX

The culmination of Europe’s 2016-17 club season is nearly upon us as the Champions League Final is set to take center stage in Cardiff, Wales!  It’s Juventus and Real Madrid that will be taking on Millennium Stadium this Saturday for the gold.  Being two of Europe’s “Super Clubs”, the Zebras and the Whites are poised to put on a spectacle for the ages as the squads are littered with world class, era defining and defying players.  In addition, regardless of who lifts the iconic “bunny ears”, club history will be made.  Juventus is chasing a treble of trophies this campaign.  They’ve won Italy’s domestic league and cup already, with the Champions League being Juve’s final task.  Only eight times in history has the feat of winning a treble been accomplished.  Barcelona won it last in the 2014-15 season.  Conversely, Madrid is seeking a record 12th European championship.  In doing so, the Whites would become the first club to win back-to-back European titles since the inception of the Champions League’s current format, which was introduced over 20 years ago.  So without further ado, let’s get you pumped and primed for this instant classic!

Road To The Final

Juventus FC

Upon winning Serie A, Juventus gained automatic entrance to the Champions League Group Stage.  Juve was drawn to Group H, met by competitors Sevilla (ESP), Lyon (FRA), and Dinamo Zagreb (CRO).  On paper, the Zebras appeared to be heavy favorites to win the Group.  Back-to-back-to-back Europa League champions Sevilla were likely Juve’s only serious threat, and still the Zebras took 4 out of 6 points from their two encounters.  In the end, Juventus won Group H by claiming 14 of a possible 18 points on way to the Knockout Stage.  In the Round of 16, the Bianconeri faced off against a gritty, but undisciplined Porto (POR) side.  This lack of coolness was the Dragoes undoing as they played short-handed in both legs, with Juve wining 3-0 on aggregate.  Then came the Quarterfinals.  It was a rematch of the 2014-15 Champions League Final against mighty Barcelona.  Two years ago, Gigi Buffon saw three balls hit the back of his net en route to a 3-1 loss and his second Champions League Final defeat. But this go round was different from the jump.  Paulo Dybala took matters into his own hands as he produced a first half double.  There was no looking back.  Juventus would go on to win the tie 3-0.  Shutting out the MSN for all 180 minutes.  Next up, it was the young guns from Monaco who would try to crack Juve’s iron clad back line in the Semifinals.  Teenage phenom, Kylian Mbappe did just that in the second leg, but by that time the writing was already on the wall.  Gonzalo Higuin netted an away brace in the first leg, while ex-Barca star Dani Alves put his offensive prowess on display in the second leg, as the Zebras romped to the Final via a 4-1 aggregate.

Real Madrid C.F.

Unlike the Italians, Real Madrid’s route to Cardiff wasn’t as straight forward.  Not by a long shot!  Despite being the reigning European champions, Real Madrid were truly tested in the Group Stage.  The Galacticos were drawn to Group F with Borussia Dortmund (DEU), Sporting Lisbon (POR), and Legia Warsaw (POL).  In truth, the Vikingos should have won the group handily.  However, they drew to a valiant, but well under-qualified Legia side 3-3 in Warsaw. They also had two 2-2 draws to Dortmund, on way to finishing behind the German side in second place.  Thus, Madrid were paired up with another Group winner, Napoli, for the Round of 16.  The Italian side, featuring former Whites in Jose Calijon and Abidol, performed admirably as they scored in each leg.  But captain Sergio Ramos and legendary hitman, Cristiano Ronaldo were simply too much as Real rolled to a 6-2 aggregate win.  Then came the Quarterfinals against Bayern Munchen.  Controversy ran rampant in this tie as Bayern found themselves playing down a man in both matches.  Despite that, Bayern still would have gone through to the Semifinals if it weren't for several offside Ronaldo goals that were counted, resulting in an extra time 6-3 aggregate final in favor of the “King’s Club”.  Next it was a much anticipated Madrid Derby Semifinal against Atletico.  The first match opened with Ronaldo scoring yet another offside goal, leading Madrid to a 3-0 win at the Bernabeu. So, the two-legged, “fingers crossed,” extra time drama that the neutrals expected, was thrown out the window after the first 90 minutes. The second leg provided some intrigue, as Atletico went up 2-0 early, but by half time the tie was officially sealed as Karim Benzma worked with Isco for a crucial away goal.  In the end, Real would lose the game 2-1, but win the tie 4-2 and earn a title game berth.

Cardiff Key Performers

Juventus FC

For the Old Lady, we must begin with Gianluigi Buffon!  The Zebra and Nerazzuri #1 has been plying his trade between the posts for 22 years. The club and country captain is not only the best goalkeeper this season, but the best of his generation, and perhaps the best shot stopper in the history of the sport.  He’s broken countless records, and has won a bushel basket of trophies.  But one major award has remained elusive after all these years, the Champions League winner’s medal.  Gigi has been to two prior Finals, but has lost both times.  This go around, perhaps, his future will be brighter.  Buffon is getting a little long in the tooth now, as he is 38 years old, but that hasn’t resulted in a dip in form this season, and I’m sure it won’t come Saturday.  Rather, I expect him to perform as intensely and intently as he has ever done before.  Gigi knows this could be his last rodeo at the summit of European club football,  and he’s surely going to make it count.  Regardless of what Cristiano and company have to say about it.

Meanwhile, up front, for Juve, the combination of Paulo Dybala and Gonzalo Higuain could cause fits for a Real backline that has a hard time keeping clean sheets.  The duo has combined to net 44 goals in all competitions this term, including 9 in the Champions League.  Plus, Higuain will be keen on putting one past his former club, while Dybala might sneak one past his future club.

Real Madrid C.F.

As for the Galaticos, four time Ballon d’Or winner, Cristiano Ronaldo will once again be in the spotlight.  The all-time Champions League goalscorer has netted 10 times this campaign, one goal behind his biggest competition, Leo Messi, for most strikes this term.  In addition, whether the goals were legal or not, 7 of Ronaldo’s 10 goals have come during the Knockout Stage.  Thus he’s heated up when the games have mattered most.  The question is, will Ronaldo be able to keep his red hot form against Italy’s starting defense?  Yup, Juventus’s defense of Buffon, Bonucci, Barzagli, and Chellini are all Italian national team starters.  Thus, Ronaldo has his work cut out for him, but the all-time great surely has the class to get it done.

In terms of a supporting cast, Real’s collection of Galaticos shimmer as much as a set of Galway crystal.  World class quality can be seen from Madrid on every edge of the pitch and every seat on the bench.  However, two men are poised to play a deciding role in this Final.  First, Sergio Ramos.  The White’s starting center back and club captain have a propensity to pop up on the biggest stage via set pieces.  So, keep an eye on Ramos during every Real corner and free kick.  Second,  has to be Gareth Bale.  Despite being taken off injured in the first half of Madrid’s recent El Clasico loss, Bale will be participating in a homecoming of sorts.  Not only is Gareth Welsh, but he was born in Cardiff and is the country’s National Team captain.  Thus, he’s destined to take to the pitch as a second half substitute and perhaps produce a little magic for the de-facto home supporters.

LSB Prediction

For the reasons above, this year’s Champions League Final will be filled with superstars and sub-plots.  Whether, it’s witnessing Ronaldo vs Buffon, homegrown Bale coming off the bench, Higuain and Dybala taking on the past and future, or Sergio Ramos stunning us all with a towering header, this Final will be one for the ages.  When it’s all said and done though, it’ll be Gianluigi Buffon and his ballyhooed bundle of men who will finally hoist the iconic “Bunny Ears”.  2-0 Juventus FC

UEFA EUROPA LEAGUE FINAL 2017

Manchester United FC vs AFC Ajax
Friends Arena, Stockholm, Sweden
Wednesday, May 24th 2017    2:45PM EST    FS1

We are in the midst of Europe’s trophy season as all domestic league champions have been crowned.  Thus, only the domestic cups and European championships are what’s left up for grabs.  This upcoming Saturday is definitely Footballing Shorts worthy as the finales for the FA Cup, Copa del Rey, Coupe de France, and DFB-Pokal are all taking place across the continent.  However, Wednesday’s Europa League Final between Manchester United and Ajax Amsterdam is the most important of them all.  These two clubs will be vying for European supremacy, and for an automatic berth into the Champions League Group Stage.  Therefore, this week’s article is solely focused on this meeting between two of Europe’s most storied clubs.  I’ll provide a brief synopsis on the Europa League, reveal my key performers of the match, and reveal my LSB prediction!

UEFA Europa League

Established as the UEFA Cup in 1971, and later rebranded as the UEFA Europa League in 2009, this European competition is the continent’s second tier tournament.  Unlike the Champions League which is dominated by a select few “Super Clubs”, this league primarily allows big clubs from “smaller" countries (Steau Bucharesti, Shakhtar Donetsk, Sparta Praha, Zenit St. Petersburg, Fenerbahce, etc.) an avenue to legitimately compete on the European stage against clubs from the more predominant countries (Man U, Ajax, Lyon, Club Bilbao, Fiorentina, Shalke, etc.) that narrowly missed out on Champions League qualification.  Despite the vast majority of the Europa League winners hailing from the top domestic leagues in Europe (Spain, Germany, England, Italy, etc.), Galatasaray, CSKA Moscow, Zenit St. Petersburg, and Shakhtar Donetsk have all won the trophy since the turn of the 21st century.  Meanwhile, Scotland giants Celtic and Rangers plus Shakhtar Donetsk have been runners-up during this period.

This season once again we saw several clubs from smaller countries such as Besiktas, Genk, and Anderlecht all reach the quarterfinals, as well as an incredibly young, but fiercely talented Ajax squad reach the final.  Thus, this competition is about both inclusion and talent. The Champions League is too often void of intriguing and unusual matchups, something that the UEFA Cup so frequently brings. This final set, to kickoff in less than 48 hours, punctuates my point.

Key Performers

Heading into this game Manchester United is considered the heavy favorite to hoist the cup as the club possesses a bevy of billboard footballers, starting with none other than Paul Pogba.  As most of us know by now, the 23 year old box-to-box midfielder was sold back to United from current Champions League finalists, Juventus, last summer for a record fee of £89.3 million.  As a result, the French international has been in the spotlight all season with, quite frankly, unreasonably high expectations placed on his shoulders.  Thus, Pogba’s first season back in the Premier League has been considered inconsistent. He’s dazzled at times producing world class crosses to Zlatan Ibrahimovic, but has also blown routine set piece cover assignments.  With that said, all eyes will be on Pogba in Stockholm, as he’ll be expected to boss the midfield and lead Manchester’s offensive attack.

In addition to Pogba, 19 year old Marcus Rashford will be carrying the load up front for the Red Devils.  Zlatan’s Man U career ended abruptly, roughly a month ago, due to injury. He wasn’t picked up by Man U for a second year, although he may be rehabbed before the season’s end. So, where Zlatan would have lead the charge, Rashford has been called upon to produce the goods and the goals for one of England’s most trophy laden clubs, and he’s performed admirably.  Rashford shone in the Chelsea match as he beat England’s best defense with his pace, timing and scoring prowess. He also came through in the first leg of the Europa League Semifinal as Rashford’s wondrous free kick strike was the decider.  Therefore, be sure to hone in on this talented center forward during the game. He’s sure to give Ajax defenders’ Joel Veltman, Davison Sanchez, Jairo Riedewald, and Keeny Tete fits throughout the evening.

As for Ajax, I suspect that the squad know’s it’s the “underdog” heading into this fixture.  With that said, I don’t believe this will alter manager Peter Bosz game plan or change the players’ mindset and approach whilst being on the pitch.  Rather, they will continue to play an attacking minded and front line pressing style of football.  This mentality and tactical formula is what has gotten a historically young Ajax club to its first European final since playing for a fifth Champions League title in 1996.  The Lancer’s have been lead by teenage sensation, Kasper Dolberg.  The Lancer’s center forward has been absolutely magnificent in his first season with the Dutch club.  Many, including me, were wondering how Ajax would replace the outgoing Polish international Arkadiusz Milik up front, and by mid-season that question had been answered.  Dolberg has produced 16 goals in 29 appearances this term. This includes a goal in each leg of the Europa League semifinals, that saw Ajax win 5-4 over Lyon on aggregate.  So, be sure to watch Dolberg roam United’s penalty area as he’s likely to have a say of his own in this match and be dubbed by locals as a true Son of the god’s.

LSB Prediction

This year’s final in will be doused in rich tradition and perhaps an unmatched pedigree that hasn’t been seen before in this competition.  Man United and Ajax have combined to win 53 domestic league titles, 30 domestic cups, 29 domestic super cups, 3 UEFA Super Cups, 7 Champions League trophies, and 1 Europa League title.  The stage will is set for a full night of fireworks.  I predict Marcus Rashford and Kasper Dolberg will both strike the back of the net. But, it will be Paul Pogba’s sublime pass to Henrikh Mkhitaryan that will send the squad into the ascendancy. Finally, Manchester United legend, Wayne Rooney, will end his time at Old Trafford by hoisting the club’s first ever Europa League trophy.  2-1 Manchester United FC

LALIGA FOOTBALLING SHORTS

The 2016-17 football season is officially coming to a close in Europe.  The domestic campaigns began finishing up last week as Netherland’s blue-blood Feyenoord Rotterdam hoisted its first Eredivise title since 1999 as they narrowly finished ahead of Europa League finalist Ajax Amsterdam, and last season’s Champions PSV Eindhoven.  In England, Chelsea was crowned Premier League Champions for the second time in three seasons after beating West Bromwich Albion in the dying stages of Friday’s match.  In Portugal, Benfica once again claimed the Liga Nos title for the fourth consecutive season.  This week, I’ll be focusing on two matches that will decide Spain’s LaLiga.  It’s Malaga vs Real Madrid and Barcelona vs Eibar.  Take note that, these two matches will be played simultaneously on Sunday at 2:00PM EST, so be sure to have two electronic devices up and running in order to watch both matches.  With that, let’s provide you with some fun footballing shorts!

LaLiga Matchday 38

Malaga C.F. vs Real Madrid C.F.
La Rosaleda, Malaga, Spain
Sunday, May 21st, 2017    2:00PM EST    beIN SPORTS Spanish | fuboTV

Assuming Real Madrid wins its make up game mid week against Celta Vigo, Los Blancos would need to produce a draw or better versus Malaga to be crowned Champions of LaLiga.  As defending European Champions, and finalists again this campaign, Madrid clearly has the talent to beat Malaga and win the league.  But what’s more, is that the ambition, the drive that this current Galactico squad possesses, is what has been the difference from recent years gone by, domestically.  See, for as much success Real has had historically,  Los Blancos haven’t lifted the La Liga trophy since 2012 and have only done so on two occasions since 2009.  It’s been Barcelona that’s primarily dominated Spain’s top-flight.

But this year, manager, Zinadine Zidane, engrained the importance of winning this competition into his players from day one of the pre-season.  Therefore it’s been no surprise that Real has continuously won matches “at the death” this year, as the club has simply refused to lose.  Whether, it was Marcelo’s late heroics against Valencia or Sergio Ramos securing the stoppage time equalizer against Barca, there has been a trend that’s led Madrid to within touching distance of winning LaLiga.

For these reasons, Madrid will most definitely be focused, come Sunday.  Thus mid-table Malaga will have to bring it’s “A” game, if it’ll have any shot of dashing Madrid’s hopes of winning the league.  With that said, the Bolquerones have shown their best quality against other top Spanish clubs, this season.  In two matches against Barcelona this year, the Albicelestes have shut out La Blaugrana on way too a 0-0 draw and 2-0 win.  In addition, Real Madrid won a tight 2-1 game against Malaga at the Bernabeu earlier this season.  This strong precedent makes it tough to consider Madrid losing.

Expect Malaga to try and press high up the pitch, in an attempt to force Madrid’s back four to turn the ball over.  With the likes of Sergio Ramos, Marcelo, Varane, and Carvajal on the backline, that will quite the task.  Also, keep an eye on Malaga’s goalkeeper Carlos Kameni.  Kameni is going to have a lot of work to do between the posts, but he has the quality to shut the very best out, as was proven by against Barca’s fabled MSN.

Conversely, Real will aim to boss the midfield through Kroos, Modric, and Casemiro.  In doing so, Los Blancos will gain the lion share of possession and ultimately control the flow of the game.  Lastly, expect Ronaldo to be bursting forward throughout the game with his eyes not only on goal, but Spain’s ultimate prize of taking the league title.

FC Barcelona vs SD Eibar
Camp Nou, Barcelona, Catalunya, Spain
Sunday, May 21st 2017    2:00PM EST    beIN SPORTS | fuboTV

Come Sunday, Cules inside the Camp Nou will have one eye on the pitch and one on their smartphones hoping for a Barca victory and a Real Madrid loss.  If that happens, then La Azulgrana will claim its fourth straight LaLiga title and 25th overall.  If not, then it’ll be a rather disappointing end to Luis Enrique’s tenure as Barcelona skipper as the club will only produce two pieces of Silverware this season in the Spanish Supercoppa and the Copa del Rey, assuming they beat Alaves in the final on May 27th.

The biggest reason for the downturn in the squad’s performance this campaign is three-pronged.  First, Barca’s core is getting older.  Andres Iniesta is now into his early thirties, but seems to be moving around the pitch as if he’s closer to his forties.  Don’t get me wrong though, the midfield maestro is still phenomenal with the ball, as proven by his sublime through ball to Luis Suarez this past week against Las Palmas.  However, much like Sergio Busquets, he’s lost a step or two, which has resulted in late challenges, getting beat to the ball, or simply run past while in midfield. All of this, often times, leaves the defense vulnerable.

Secondly, and perhaps the most glaring difference from this year’s squad in comparison to the first two editions of Enrique’s reign is the absence of right back Dani Alves.  The former Barca, and current Juventus, man was integral to the club’s success.  Alves had the speed and technical ability to push up the right flank to produce deadly accurate crosses into the penalty area, and provide support. Alves also added space for Leo Messi to roam free, take and make long range shots, and still be able to track back defensively to stop the opponent’s counter attacks.  Whether it was strictly a financial decision or believing that midfielder, turned right back, Sergi Roberto would be able to fill the cleats, or simply the club undervaluing his overall importance to the team’s success, FCB was greatly mistaken.  As such, Roberto, who does indeed have talent, has played out of position all year long and it showed.  His speed, offensive imagination, and defensive ability all pale in comparison to Alves. As a result, the club suffered on both ends of the pitch.

Third, Barcelona brought in five new faces this past offseason, to bolster the club’s squad depth, not including the buy-back of Denis Suarez.  As the MSN played more minutes in the 2015-16 campaign than any other starting front three competing on Europe’s biggest stages, the idea for depth was spot on.  The problem that arose, however, was that Barca splurged on young players with high ceilings, as opposed to proven veterans.  Thus, out of Jaspen Cillessen, Lucas Digne, Samuel Umtiti, Paco Alcacer, and Andre Gomes, only Umtiti has proven worthy of wearing Barca’s badge.  Cillessen was nervy between the sticks in limited duty. Digne didn’t compare in quality to that of his predecessor and teammate Jordi Alba. Paco couldn't find the back of the net, if his life depended on it. And Andre Gomes, whelp, there are no words that could possibly describe how poorly he performed this year.

The positive in all this is, that despite all that, Barca still has a shot of winning the league with a win over Eibar.  So, expect a spirited performance from the world class MSN, as they strive to finish strong.  The three have been in glittering form, as Messi is on set to claim a record tying fourth Golden Boot award for most goals in Europe. He’s netted 35 in LaLiga and 51 in all competitions.  Meanwhile, Suarez is second in LaLiga with 27 goals and Neymar is coming off a Las Palmas performance that saw him bag a hat-trick.

Therefore, a win is likely, but winning the league is not.  ESPN’s SPI give La Blaugrana just a 28% chance of winning LaLiga. Once Real earns a result against Celta, that percentage will only dwindle.  But as the old adage goes “it’s not over until the fat lady sings”, and until then, Barca has shot.  Regardless though, come Sunday afternoon, it’ll surely be edge of your seat entertainment, especially if Real are in a “dogfight”.  So make sure to grab an Estrella Damm, kick back and enjoy LaLiga’s enthralling ending.

CELLAR DWELLERS FOOTBALLING SHORTS

Welcome back to the Lewnau Sports Bureau!  Last week we witnessed stellar performances from some of Europe’s elite as Real Madrid and Juventus have almost assuredly staked their place in the Champions League Final in Cardiff, Wales, despite still having the second leg to play.  On the Europa League front, Ajax also showed its class with a rousing 4-1 defeat of Lyon.  Meanwhile, Marcus Rashford proved decisive by way of his wondrous free kick goal against Celta Vigo.  This week, the bottom of the table is just as interesting as the top, as this weekend plays provider for the penultimate matchday of the domestic season.  I’ll be focusing on two Premier League matches that are sure to play an important part in deciding who gets relegated to the Championship and who gets to stay in England’s top flight for another season.

Sunderland A.F.C. vs Swansea City A.F.C.
Stadium of Light, Sunderland, England, United Kingdom
Saturday, May 13th 2017    10:00AM EST    NBC Family of Networks

The first match coming on Saturday pits 17th placed Swansea City against 20th placed Sunderland.  Despite the Black Cats sitting last in the Premier League table and having their relegation already cemented, the club hasn’t given up on the season.  Last weekend, they went to Hull City and played spoiler in a 2-0 victory.  On matchday 37, expect Sunderland to try and do more of the same against a Swans side that sit just one point ahead of 18th place, in the final relegation spot, currently held by Hull.  While, there record doesn’t show it, Sunderland does have talent. Seasoned striker, Jermaine Defoe, has netted 15 times this campaign, ranking eighth in the league.  Meanwhile, Swansea has seen a resurgence of sorts down the stretch as the squad has taken 10 of a possible 12 points from its last three matches, which has gone a long way into staying afloat in the league.  Thus expect a full-throttle performance from Fernando Llorente andGylfi Sigurdsson as they’ll try to fire the Swans forward, leaving youngster Jordan Pickford with a lot of work to do between the posts.

LSB Prediction:  The Swans know what’s at stake and what a win will mean for the club’s future.  Therefore, despite Defoe’s determination in front of goal, the Welsh side will prevail 2-1 on a late Llorente header,0= sending the club and its away supporters into sheer euphoria as Swansea inches closer to Premier League survival! 2-1 Swansea City A.F.C.

Crystal Palace F.C. vs Hull City A.F.C.
Selhurst Park, London, England, United Kingdom
Sunday, May 14th 2017    7:00AM EST    MSNBC

The second match on the docket should be a real up and down affair, as both clubs will be seeking a result.  Crystal Palace is in pole position, as the Eagles sit four points above Hull City in 16th place.  Thus a result of any kind for -Palace, win or draw, would be enough to clinch a slot in the proverbial “safe zone”, 17th place or better, in the final standings.  Meanwhile, the Tigers will likely find themselves in “must win” mode. They will need to pick up all three points to pull within one point of Palace and Swansea City, come the final matchday of the season, assuming the Swans beat Sunderland on Saturday.  For Crystal Palace, the weight of winning will be squarely on the shoulders of former Liverpool striker, Christian Benteke, and attacking-minded midfielder Wilfried Zaha.  As for Hull, Polish international Kamil Grosicki could be an x-factor offensively.  Since signing with the Tigers from Stade Rennais during the January transfer window, Grosicki has produced 4 assists and recently picked up the PFA Fan’s Player of the Month Award for his outstanding play in April.

LSB Prediction: With both clubs needing a result, this match should pack a punch of energy, aggression, physicality, testiness, and more.  With that said, the Eagles will soar in and around Selhurst come Sunday as Benteke and Zaha will strike the score sheet, thanks to Hull City’s ocean-sized goal.  The Tiger’s are tied for last in goals allowed in the league, and that deficiency will rear its ugly head once more, ultimately striking a nail in Hull City’s Premier League coffin.  3-1 Crystal Palace F.C.
